The historical center with the Engels House and the Museum for Early Industrialization in Barmen, together with the city archive in Unterbarmen, form the historical and cultural memory of the city of Wuppertal.

Organizationally, it comprises three museums, the Engels House , the Museum of Early Industrialization and Manuelskotten, a few kilometers away in the Kaltenbachtal. The building ensemble also consists of the Kannegiesser factory , the Barthels and Röhrig houses, and the Engelsgarten , on the edge of which was Friedrich Engels ' birthplace , which was destroyed in the Second World War. This ensemble is home to the Museum for Early Industrialization, which, as a museum of industrial and social history, addresses the early development of industry in Wuppertal with its technical, social, economic and mental history facets.

The focus of the museum presentation is the development of the textile industry, the associated industrialization and urbanization with all its social consequences. The museum opened in 1983.

Michael Knieriem headed the historical center until his retirement in spring 2008, followed by the historian Eberhard Illner . Lars Bluma has headed the center since May 2018 .

In 2018, the new Engels pavilion was opened between Haus Röhrig and Bundesstraße 7 , which has since housed the administration of the center and offers information for visitors. Until the reopening of the museum, it will serve as the central point of contact for visitors and tourists.

At the beginning of December it was announced that the designation Historical Center will be given up at the beginning of the Angel Year in February 2020. The city's historical center is to be renamed the Center for City History and Industrial Culture. [outdated]
