Michael Knieriem welcomed Erich Honecker to the historical center in September 1987 .

Michael Knieriem (born May 24, 1943 in Lahr / Black Forest ) is a German historian and author and was the director of the Museum Historisches Zentrum in Wuppertal .

The author of several historical textbooks on the Wuppertal region, where he specialized in the life and work of Friedrich Engels , was director of the historical center for more than two decades until he retired in spring 2008. His successor was Eberhard Illner .

Knieriem was in 2006 by the Cultural Affairs Marlis Drevermann been mandated role Eduard von der Heydts in the era of National Socialism to clarify what the future role and the appointment of Eduard von der Heydt Cultural Award should influence. As a result, the commission of experts could not find any confirmation of Eduard von der Heydt as a National Socialist , but the culture award was renamed the “ Von der Heydt Culture Prize ”.
