von der Heydt Culture Prize

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The von der Heydt Culture Prize (until 2007 Eduard von der Heydt Culture Prize ) is the city of Wuppertal's most important culture prize . It was initiated in 1950 under the name “Kulturpreis der Stadt Wuppertal”, and in 1957 it was renamed “Eduard von der Heydt-Kulturpreis der Stadt Wuppertal”. It is endowed with 12,500 euros (initially 3000 D-Mark ), and there is also a sponsorship award of 5000 euros. The culture award is given to artists in recognition of their life's work, especially if they are connected to Wuppertal and the Bergisches Land . It was initially awarded annually and since 1989 every two years. From 1950 to 2010, 100 personalities and ensembles were awarded the culture prize.

Controversy about the eponymous person, Eduard von der Heydt

In 2006, the Else-Lasker-Schüler-Gesellschaft initiated a discussion about the namesake Eduard von der Heydt , who was accused of having close personal and business relationships with the National Socialist system. Von der Heydt was an active supporter of the regime and took advantage of the situation of the Jews at the time to bring their art treasures into his possession, well below the price.

In the United States of America a federal law is still in force today, which describes the native of Wuppertal as an "enemy of the USA". The Else-Lasker-Schüler-Gesellschaft suggested that the city's culture award should be named after a victim, the poet Else Lasker-Schüler , a native of Wuppertal, instead of a supporter of the perpetrators . This project failed.

Lord Mayor Peter Jung and the then head of the Department of Culture, Marlis Drevermann , commissioned a study from the historian Michael Knieriem employed by the city . After intensive research, he came to the conclusion that von der Heydt had been a follower, but had also helped fellow Jewish citizens. Peter Jung suspended the award ceremony for 2007 for the time being. An ethics committee, to which the former mayors Ursula Kraus and Hans Kremendahl belonged, should deal with the future name of the award. She suggested that the prize should be called the “Von-der-Heydt” prize in the future. The Else-Lasker-Schüler-Gesellschaft accepted the compromise as the “lowest common denominator”.
