Hanns-Martin Schneidt

Hanns-Martin Schneidt (born December 6, 1930 in Kitzingen ; † May 28, 2018 near Munich ) was a German conductor , harpsichordist , organist and university professor .

Hanns-Martin Schneidt spent his childhood in Leipzig. In 1940 he became a member of the St. Thomas Choir of St. Thomas School and a student of St. Thomas Cantor Günther Ramin . He completed his further music studies from 1949 to 1952 at the Munich Music Academy . While still a student, he began to work as a choirmaster and organist at the Erlöserkirche in Munich . In 1954 he won the Richard Strauss Prize of the City of Munich.

In 1955, the just 25-year-old Schneidt was appointed director of the church music school in Berlin . 1961–1963 he headed the Bach Collegium he founded and the Bach Choir at the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church . He then moved to Hamburg and taught from 1971 to 1978 as a professor at the local music college . 1963–1985, Schneidt was GMD of the Wuppertal Symphony Orchestra . From 1984 to 2001 he was the successor to Karl Richter, who died in 1981, as artistic director of the Munich Bach Choir , and from 1985 also professor for orchestral conducting and church music at the Munich University of Music and Theater. Hanns-Martin Schneidt has received several awards for his work and passionate commitment to music. a. with the Eduard von der Heydt Culture Prize of the city of Wuppertal, with the medal “ Munich shines ”, the Federal Cross of Merit and the Bavarian Order of Merit .

Hanns-Martin Schneidt has repeatedly worked as a guest conductor with many German symphony orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic , the Munich Philharmonic and the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra (RSB).
