Erich Sehlbach

Erich Oswald Sehlbach (born November 18, 1898 in Barmen , today in Wuppertal , † October 31, 1985 in Essen ) was a German composer .

Erich Sehlbach was born in 1898 as the son of a Barmer merchant. Due to his musical talent, which was revealed during private singing and piano lessons in adolescence, he was accepted into the Leipzig Conservatory in 1919 . He studied singing, piano and music theory under Professors Wolfgang Geist , Stephan Krehl and Max Ludwig and after completing his studies he worked as a music critic in Munich from 1925 to 1927 . In 1928 he accepted the call to the Folkwang School in Essen, where he taught until his retirement in 1964.

His numerous and varied works include string quartets , serenades , rhapsodies and the operas Galilei , Die Stadt and Signor Caraffa . He created numerous piano works, which u. a. interpreted by his wife, the concert pianist Irma Zucca-Sehlbach. He died in 1985 after a serious illness.
