Life

After graduating from high school, Gertrud Höhler studied literature and art history in Bonn , Berlin , Zurich and Mannheim from 1960 to 1966 at the Helmholtz grammar school in Wuppertal . During this time she belonged to the left subcultural milieu. She was in a relationship with Ulf Miehe (with whom she self-published a volume of poetry in 1962) and was friends with Jörg Fauser and Bernward Vesper . In 1967 she became a guest with a work on the subject of restless guests. The quotation from the Bible in Wilhelm Raabe's novel on Dr. phil. PhD and worked at the University of Mannheim . In 1972, at the age of 31, Höhler was appointed to the founding senate of the University of Paderborn as an academic adviser .

From 1976 to 1993, Höhler was Professor of German Studies and General Literature Studies at the University of Paderborn . She gained national fame through numerous publications and media appearances in which she commented on current political and economic issues.

In the 1980s, Höhler was considered a permanent candidate for a ministerial position in the Kohl cabinet. From 1987 to 1989 she advised the Management Board spokesman of Deutsche Bank , Alfred Herrhausen . In 1989, the then VW boss, Carl Hahn Höhler, wanted to work as a communications consultant against resistance from within his own ranks. During her work for Deutsche Bank, she worked as a consultant for other associations and companies and was on leave from her professorship. In 1993 she resigned from her professorship in Paderborn to work as a freelance journalist and management consultant. Professors and students had accused her of neglecting her teaching duties; she herself spoke of bullying .

In the book Rights Women published by right-wing extremism researcher Renate Bitzan in 1997 . Skingirls, Valkyries and fine ladies are portrayed Gertrud Höhler on pages 254 to 256. There her journalism is mentioned in the right-wing monthly magazine Mut and the Konrad Adenauer Prize for Literature 1988 of the national conservative Germany Foundation . She was also the author of the national revolutionary magazine Wir sich and interview partner of the right-wing conservative weekly newspaper Junge Freiheit and Novo magazine .

In addition, from 1988 to 2000, Höhler was the presenter of the talk show Baden-Badener Disput - culture talk at the time , which had a total of 58 episodes.

In public, Gertrud Höhler a. a. known for her alleged advisory role for politicians like Helmut Kohl and Dieter Althaus . In 2012 Benjamin von Stuckrad-Barre attacked her on the television show Markus Lanz with the question of which politicians had actually advised her. She then named "Chancellor Kohl" and the CSU , which was immediately contradicted by the present Edmund Stoiber , whereupon Höhler replied that Stoiber did not represent the CSU. As a book author, she published titles like Wölfin unter Wölfen. Why Men Make Mistakes Without Women (2000), Why Trust Triumphs (2003) and Beyond Greed. On the luxury of sharing (2005). In 1992 she also caused a sensation in an advertising campaign for the credit card company American Express with a photo taken by Annie Leibovitz , which shows the literary scholar in riding clothes and in a luxurious setting with her son. An article in the magazine Betonkon (March 1993), in which Eckhard Henscheid made fun of this photo (and a second one), led to Höhler's lawsuit, which was dismissed in the first instance. Henscheid was later sentenced to pay 20,000 marks in compensation for pain and suffering.

In April 2007 she was elected to the newly created supreme governing body of the University Council of her former university in Paderborn. A little later she came under public criticism after the Neue Westfälische had researched that the Saxon NPD member of the state parliament, Peter Klose , was running a “citizens' office” in a house that she owned in Zwickau . Höhler initially denied having known about her tenant's NPD background, but later admitted this. As a result, the then Science Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Andreas Pinkwart ( FDP ), called on her to resign from the University Council of Paderborn University on June 22, 2007 , which Höhler refused, as the NPD was an approved party belonging to the Saxon state parliament. On July 2, 2007, the university council withdrew her mandate in the selection committee for the election of the future university management. She remained a member of the University Council until 2012, when she was no longer appointed for the next electoral term.

In various books and media appearances, she presented herself as a harsh critic of Angela Merkel. She accused the Chancellor of working on the "disintegration of democracy" , impaired by her socialization in the GDR , and of installing an authoritarian regime clandestinely. The majority of journalists reject Höhler's criticism as being exaggerated. Instead of cold analysis, it is bursting with repetition, on the one hand, in denouncing banalities (such as Merkel's cold-weathering of political competitors) and, on the other hand, in a heated demonization of the Chancellor, which is partly reminiscent of conspiracy theories.
