Between 1972 and 1981 he worked in a duo with Günter Christmann , some of whom worked with Pina Bausch . He continued to work with musicians of new music such as Harald Bojé (album 1975, trio performance with Christmann at the Moers Festival 1978) and increasingly concentrated on the meditative-tonal component of drumming . He also worked as a freelance musician, instrument developer (for WS Percussion, a company he co-founded ) and drum teacher. From 1974 to 1977 he headed the "Wuppertal Drum School". As a solo musician, Schönenberg set standards, but after a spiritual experience in 1982 he decided not to continue playing. His three-volume drum school “The drums. Ein Weg zur Musik ”was published by Moeck (the planned volumes 4 and 5, which would have been dedicated to improvisation and free solo playing, were not written).

From 1981 to 1984 he was instructed in Core Energetic by John Pierrakos . He then founded his own school. Until 2000 he led a “training to become a helper for spiritual growth” in his “Center for Self-Transformation” in Wuppertal; in addition, he worked as a priest of the Universal Church until he left in 2001. He has been working as a seminar leader with the author Jutta Belle since 2006.
