Toshiyuki Kamioka studied conducting , composition , piano and violin at the Academy of Arts and Music in his hometown of Tokyo from 1979 to 1983 , where he was awarded the Ataka Prize in 1982. A scholarship from Rotary International enabled him to continue studying in Hamburg with Klauspeter Seibel at the University of Music and Theater .

After working as a solo repetitor and Kapellmeister in Kiel and first Kapellmeister at the Aalto Theater in Essen , Kamioka was appointed General Music Director at the Hessian State Theater in Wiesbaden in 1996, where he worked until 2004. In addition, from 1998 to 2006 he was General Music Director of the Northwest German Philharmonic in Herford .

In 2004 Kamioka took over the position of general music director of the city of Wuppertal and a professorship for conducting at the Saar University of Music in Saarbrücken . From 2009 to 2016 he was chief conductor and artistic director of the Wuppertal Symphony Orchestra in Wuppertal and also general music director at the Saarland State Theater in Saarbrücken. He uses the Saarbrücken dual function to set up a joint orchestral academy for the state theater and music college.

Toshiyuki Kamioka has been guest conductors with the NHK Symphony Orchestra , the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra , and the radio orchestras of WDR , MDR , BR , SWR and SR .

In 2012 the mayor of Wuppertal, Peter Jung , announced that in addition to his position as chief conductor of the symphonic orchestra, Kamioka would also become the opera director of the Wuppertal theaters. In the latter role, he replaced Johannes Weigand in the summer of 2014. While Kamioka's skills and achievements as a conductor were widely recognized, his opera directorship was judged by the press to be "unlucky and unimaginative".

After far-reaching changes in the opera business - Kamioka resigned from the entire ensemble of singers (a process that was unique in a major German city) and switched to guest singers - Kamioka himself prematurely terminated his contract in November 2014 and announced that after the 2015 / Would go back to Japan in 2016. The Briton Julia Jones succeeded him in 2016/2017 and became General Music Director of the Symphony Orchestra and the Opera. Berthold Schneider becomes the director of the opera. Kamioka took over the leadership of the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra in September 2016 and the position of chief conductor of the Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra in the 2016/17 season.
