Julia Jones (born April 28, 1961 in Droitwich , England ) is a British conductor .

Life

Julia Jones received her training at the Chethams School of Music Manchester, the University of Bristol and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama London, among others . In the mid-1980s, Jones left her home country. In Germany, she laid the foundation for a successful conducting career through her work as a répétiteur at the Cologne Opera and the Stuttgart State Theater . From 1991 to 1995 she was the second conductor and assistant to the general music director Alicja Mounk in Ulm . From 1995 to 1997 she was the first Kapellmeister at the Staatstheater Darmstadt . After a number of successful guest conductors, she moved to Theater Basel as chief opera conductor in 1998 . She has been working as a freelance artist since 2002 and frequently conducts at the opera houses of Vienna ( State and Volksoper ), Genoa ( Teatro Carlo Felice ), Frankfurt am Main ( Oper Frankfurt ) and Berlin ( Staatsoper Unter den Linden ). Her repertoire includes all styles, but a special focus is on the works of Giuseppe Verdi and WA Mozart . Her reputation as a special Mozart connoisseur led her to conduct a Mozart matinee as well as the singspiel Die Entführung aus dem Serail during the Salzburg Festival 2004 . She had released this work shortly before in 2003 with great success at the Frankfurt Opera.

In the 2005/2006 season, Julia Jones took over the musical direction of the new production of Janáček's opera The Excursions of Mr Brouček at the Vienna Volksoper , the new production of Mozart's Idomeneo at the Hamburg State Opera and Mozart's early work La finta semplice at the Frankfurt Opera . In the 2006/2007 season she was also engaged at the Staatstheater Stuttgart (new production of the opera Carmen by Georges Bizet and Otello by Giuseppe Verdi) and again at the Frankfurt Opera (new production Le nozze di Figaro , Mozart).

From the season 2008/09 to 2011 Julia Jones was titular conductor of the Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa in Lisbon .

In June 2010 she directed the performance of the legendary dramatique La damnation de Faust by Hector Berlioz at the Frankfurt Opera in Frankfurt am Main . In the same year she directed an opera performance for the first time at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London.

In March 2011 Julia Jones made her debut at the Semperoper Dresden with Mozart's Entführung aus dem Serail, and in April 2011 as conductor of the Saxon State Orchestra Dresden in an orchestral concert. In summer 2016, Jones succeeded Toshiyuki Kamioka as the new general music director of the Wuppertaler Bühnen ; She is thus chief conductor of the Wuppertal Symphony Orchestra and musical director of the Wuppertal Opera.
