Flora Klee-Palyi (born October 13, 1893 in Budapest , † April 14, 1961 in Wuppertal ) was a German-Hungarian wood cutter , illustrator , translator and editor of French poetry.

Life

Flora Klee-Palyi, who also used the pseudonym Marie Philippe, was born in 1893. She studied art with a focus on graphics in Lausanne , Geneva , Munich , Rome , Florence and Paris . She then worked in Paris for some time and published several anthologies of French poetry, including texts by Gérard de Nerval , Guillaume Apollinaire , Charles Baudelaire , René Char and Paul Verlaine . In return, she translated works by Emil Barth and Ernst Meister into French and published bilingual lyrical editions.

In 1927 she moved with her husband, the internist and pharmacologist Philipp Klee (1884–1978), to Wuppertal, where she was arrested in October 1944 because of her Jewish origins. In February 1945 she was deported to Theresienstadt, from where she returned to Wuppertal with serious health problems to begin her artistic activity.

In the 1950s, Klee-Palyi designed books for the Walltor publishing house in Giessen . Among other things, she created linocuts in 1956 for the poem “Die Drei Hasen” by Christian Morgenstern . In the same year she received the Von-der-Heydt Culture Prize from the city of Wuppertal. She died on April 14, 1961 in Wuppertal. Her grave and that of her husband are in the old Protestant cemetery on Kirchhofstrasse in Wuppertal-Sonnborn.
