Gideon Schüler (born February 7, 1925 in Eschwege ; † February 11, 2017 in Friedberg ) was a German bookseller , publisher , gallery owner and poet .

Life

Gideon Schüler's parents were the bank clerk Hans Schüler (* 1891 in Heckershausen ; † 1969 in Marburg ) and Hedwig Müller (* 1898 in Barberton (South Africa) ; † 1985 in Marburg). In 1926 the family moved to Marburg. Gideon Schüler finished his school attendance in 1942 with the secondary school leaving certificate. Towards the end of the same year he was drafted into the army for Hermann Göring's division and used as a soldier in Lithuania . There he befriended the later writer Dieter Wellershoff . In 1945, pupils fled to Berlin on the Oderbruch demarcation line and were taken prisoner by the Americans. After being extradited to the English, he was released from captivity at the end of 1945.

From 1945 to 1947, Schüler completed an apprenticeship as a bookseller with Otto Roppel in Marburg. From 1948 he became a bookstore assistant to Waldemar Kirstein in Arolsen. In 1950, Schüler switched to the tobacco trade as a travel agent for the Heinrich Schirmer brothers and for August Neuhaus in Schwetzingen. In Munich he met the painter Bele Bachem in the 1950s , who put him in touch with authors. From 1956, he was a lecturer at the Walltor publishing house in Gießen, where he designed small editions of books with the illustrator Flora Klee-Palyi . In 1960 he took over the J. Ricker'sche Universitäts-Buchhandlung in Giessen, founded by Joseph Ricker in 1832 .

In 1962, Schüler married the painter Renate Lamert (* 1939 in Niesky ; † 2006 in Dortmund ). One year later the son Jan was born, and in 1964 the daughter Saskia . From 1969, Schüler became a partner in Anabas-Verlag. In 1969 he founded the gallery in the courtyard , which he managed until 1974. Artists such as Dieter Asmus , Klaus Staeck , Benno Walldorf , Gerd Winner , Peter Sorge , Maina-Miriam Munsky , Ernst Fuchs , Arnulf Rainer , Peter Tuma , Alfred Hrdlicka and Natascha Ungeheuer were shown. In the bookstore he organized readings by authors, among others with Martin Walser , Dieter Wellershoff , Thomas Roth , Horst-Eberhard Richter , Hans Keilson , Harry Oberländer , Inge Müller , Hans Mayer , Egon Bahr , Karl Krolow , Klaus Wagenbach , Paul Nizon , Rolf Hochhuth , Adolf Muschg , Ulrich Enzensberger and Walter Jens .

At the end of the seventies, Schüler became a partner in Focus Verlag Gießen. In 1986 he founded his own book series, Edition Literarischer Salon , which was first published by Focus Verlag and later continued by him as an independent publisher. In the edition he published small editions of poetry by emigrants or texts that dealt with the era of National Socialism . Student was especially close to Hans Keilson , whose volume of poems Sprachwurzellos he published in five editions between 1986 and 1998. In 1995 he published his own volume of poetry Stand (d) Stay, Sisyphos . Schüler's poems also appeared in the magazine Die Horen . In 2005, Schüler sold the bookstore and stopped publishing.
