Gerd Winner
Gerd Winner (born October 8, 1936 in Braunschweig ) is a German painter and graphic artist.
life and work
Winner studied painting from 1956 to 1962 at the University of Fine Arts in Berlin, became a master student of Werner Volkert in 1961/62 , and has since lived as a freelance painter and graphic artist in Berlin, Braunschweig and London. Since 1964 he has worked as a freelance painter and graphic artist in Berlin, and since 1975 as professor for painting and graphics at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . The baroque palace in Liebenburg , which is located on the site of the former Liebenburg castle , has been Winner's place of residence and work since 1974 .
His works are exhibited in international museums and galleries. In 1977 he took part in documenta 7 Kassel, organized by Manfred Schneckenburger . An example from this period is the painting End in acrylic on canvas from 1981.
Winner became known through large-format works in public spaces using the technique of artistic screen printing he carried out in collaboration with Chris Prater (Kelpra Studio London). The extensive graphic cycles London Transport , London Docks , Roadmarks , New York Times Square , the artistic examination of urban culture and structures as well as the artistic design of the Dominican churches of St. Albertus Magnus in Braunschweig and Heilig Kreuz in Cologne are remarkable . In 2000 Gerd Winner designed and built the "House of Silence" - a walk-in sculpture - as a room on the site of the former Bergen-Belsen concentration camp . Visitors can gather here and pause. The design and execution of the room reflects the brutal and inhuman significance of this place.
On February 17th, 2008 an altarpiece he created was inaugurated in the parish church of St. Mary's Assumption in Bad Gandersheim . The chancel had been redesigned since 2004 according to plans by the Hanoverian architect Klaus Determann . Works by the artist can be found in the collection of the Tate Gallery in London.
Gerd Winner's work was added to the portal artist database and estate archive Lower Saxony .
