Wolfgang Köllmann (born January 2, 1925 in Barmen - Langerfeld , † September 28, 1997 in Hattingen ) was a German historian and university lecturer (university professor) at the Ruhr University in Bochum .

Live and act

Köllmann attended high school in Wuppertal-Barmen and was a participant in the war from 1943 to 1945. From 1946 to 1950 he studied history and German in Göttingen . There he also did his doctorate with Werner Conze . His dissertation, Social History of the City of Barmen, was influential in the long term for social history as a whole and, above all, for modern urban history research. Köllmann is considered one of the founders of historical urbanization research . He then worked as an assistant at the social research center at the University of Münster , based in Dortmund, until 1954 . There he was mainly engaged in research on population structure and urban sociology. From 1954 to 1957 he was a fellow of the Commission for the History of Parliamentarism and Political Parties in Bonn . In this context, he submitted, among other things, a work on Friedrich Harkort . Between 1959 and 1962 he worked for the Commission of Science and Literature in Mainz, among other positions . There he worked together with Karl Erich Born on an edition of sources on German social policy between 1870 and 1914.

In 1963, Köllmann completed his habilitation and from 1964 to 1990 was a full professor of social and economic history / demography at the Faculty of History at the Ruhr University in Bochum . There he stood for an interdisciplinary research approach that combined demographic, technological, geographical, and economic and social-historical issues. Köllmann was also involved as a member of the Faculty of Economics and the Faculty of Social Science . In particular, his work on population history in the industrial age was groundbreaking. This work predestined him to the editor of the multi-volume work The Ruhr Area in the Industrial Age. Köllmann must "be counted among the pioneers of Rhenish-Westphalian industrialization research", judged Hans-Werner Hahn .

Köllmann was a member and for 29 years chairman of the Bergisches Geschichtsverein and the Historical Commission for Westphalia . He was also active in the Society for Westphalian Economic History .

Köllmann was a member of the CDU and from 1970 to 1984 council member and for some time mayor of Hattingen .
