Media project Wuppertal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Media Project Wuppertal eV is a media education youth film facility in Wuppertal, focusing on the documentary.

description

The Wuppertal media project has been conceiving and realizing model projects for active youth video work since 1992 under the motto "the best possible film for the largest possible audience". Adolescents and young adults between the ages of 14 and 28 (focus 16–20 years) are supported in their film productions (within the framework of educational institutions or freely organized) according to the principle of "learning by doing" in a product-oriented manner.

The resulting short films are presented in the cinema and partly published on YouTube and distributed nationwide (and beyond) as educational and educational tools through the company's own publishing house. The films thus reach several hundred thousand viewers. Due to their professional form and their authentic, content-based density, the Wuppertal films are the most watched youth video productions nationwide.

The young filmmakers produce here privately in groups of friends, the majority filming in the context of school projects, youth clubs, associations and advice centers. If necessary, the groups are guided by professional filmmakers and media educators from the region. As part of the work of the media project, more than 100 films are produced each year by around 1,000 active participants.

As a rule, homogeneous groups of one age are used, with a mixture of gender, ethnic origin, level of education, social status, peer group affiliation or subculture naturally occurring in the groups, subject-related or between the groups. Through the joint presentation of a large number of short films of different genres, topics and production groups in the cinema premieres, a discussion of the ideas and thoughts of other young people is achieved in a heterogeneous audience and one's own film is reflected through the common reception. To reflect on one's own sexual or cultural identity, work is carried out regularly in gender-specific or ethnically homogeneous projects.

All projects serve the active media education and the creative expression of youthful aesthetics, opinions and life contents. The main topics that young people choose again and again in their videos are sexuality, violence, addiction, psychosocial issues, death and political issues. The documentary film projects are intended to give the young people the opportunity to articulate broadly in the media by means of self-produced films with other young people (concept: peer involvement).

The films have four levels of impact:

  • Biographical reflection, discussion and the possibility of articulation for the young filmmakers as both subject and object of the films. Creation of action and media skills
  • Enlightenment and reflection through thematic discussion among young recipients
  • Informing educational, political and media multipliers;
  • political, social and personal advocacy towards adults

The films are regularly broadcast on television. The model concepts designed in Wuppertal have been taken up and applied in many other cities in recent years.

Creative pillars

The creative pillars of the media project are:

  • The youth film magazine »borderline«, which appears every two months
  • The film workshop »NoClip«, which takes place regularly in autumn - with a new topic every year
  • Thematic film workshops, for example Queer Loved 1 + 2 (2018/2019) on the subject of LGBTIQ
  • Documentary soaps
  • Thematic documentation
  • International video projects
