House of Barthels

The house Barthels (also known as Barthels-House ) is an under monument protection standing villa in Wuppertal district Barmen and at the Friedrich-Engels-Allee . The property with the address Friedrich-Engels-Allee 384 is a former merchant's villa in the Empire style . The two-story house was built in 1790 at Berliner Straße 100 and has been inhabited by the entrepreneur Philipp Barthels since around 1820 .

When Bundesstraße 7 in the Berliner Straße area was expanded in 1964 , the house had to give way to road expansion. The wooden facades were carefully salvaged and reused in a building built at the new location. After this successful relocation , which is also one of the first monument protection projects in Wuppertal, the external appearance of the villa has been restored. The stairwell was not used.

The facade facing the street is symmetrical, seven-axis. The three-axis central risalit is provided with an empire gable, pillar structure, joint cut and a two-flight external staircase. The rear of the house has a similar structure. The slate hipped roof has ornate segment arch dormers in two levels.

On April 20, 1989, the exterior of the building and the exterior stairs were placed under monument protection and, together with the Engels houses, form the historical center building ensemble .
