The Berlin street is a main road in Wuppertal and a 1.5-kilometer section of the national highway 7 (B 7). In the Barmen district ( Oberbarmen district ) it runs from the west, as an extension of the Höhne , in an eastward direction past Berliner Platz until it merges into Höfen street after the Rauentaler Brücke . From the beginning, at the Werther Bridge , it runs parallel to the Wupper .

history

On May 16, 1945, the street was renamed to the current name "Berliner Straße". Before, during the Nazi era, it was called "Ludendorffstrasse" (1938–1945) after the Prussian general Erich Ludendorff (1865–1937 ). Before that, it was already entered in the 1858 address book as Berliner Straße.

At the end of the 1950s, like the entire B 7, it was expanded to make it wider. After the tram was abolished in Wuppertal, it was also one of the first sections of the B 7, which was redesigned in the 1990s. The former median, on which the tram used to run, has been converted into a green strip with trees.

Buildings

The Odin cinema formerly stood on the corner of Berliner Strasse and Von-Eynern-Strasse . The Art Nouveau building , which was almost undamaged during the war , was demolished in 1972 despite protests by the state conservator.
