Hunt for the BTK Killer is a 2005 psychological thriller whose plot is based on a true story. Large parts of the plot are taken from the novel Nightmare in Wichita: The Hunt for the BTK Killer by US Attorney Robert Beattie , who is played by Maury Chaykin in the film .

action

2004: Dennis Rader works for the road supervisor in Park City , a small suburb of Wichita , Kansas . Nobody around him knows the dark secret he has been keeping for almost three decades. In the 1970s he was up to mischief as a BTK killer [note: the letters stand for bind, torture, kill, which suggests his approach as a serial killer], and was never caught.

Now that prosecutor Robert Beattie wrote a book about him and it was raised on a talk show, Rader believes he can tell his story better himself, sends messages to investigative authorities and causes panic among Wichita residents again. In the letters, which contain self-made photos of the victims, but also symbols that only the BTK killer can know, he also sends parts of his autobiography in the hope that it could be published. At the same time, Rader leads the life of the nice neighbor next door.

Detective Magida, who has been investigating the BTK murder case since he was 27 , and his younger colleague Baines are investigating at full speed and even ask lawyer Beattie for help. Dennis Rader was arrested in 2005 with the help of traps set by the investigators. During interrogation, he reveals his desire to kill people and his will that he would have murdered other people in the future.

In the same year he was sentenced to ten life imprisonment terms.

Background information

Even though Magida and Baines are fictional, and thus characters made up for the film, names and events related to the murder cases are authentically reproduced in the film.

In order not to arouse displeasure among the residents of Wichita or even to provoke painful feelings, it was decided not to shoot on the original location and went to Halifax, Canada ( Nova Scotia ).

The film was shown for the first time in the USA on October 9, 2005 and has been available on DVD in German-speaking countries since February 20, 2007 .
