history

In 1987, in the presence of the mayor of Wuppertal Kurt Drees and the district mayor of Wuppertal's twin town Berlin-Schöneberg , Rüdiger Jakesch , the Schöneberger Ufer west of the square and the Berlin pump were inaugurated. This is one of the 2000 Lauchhammer pumps from Berlin .

In 1991 the bus stops previously located on Berliner Platz were relocated to the square south of the suspension railway station and in the immediate vicinity of the train station. In the course of the redesign, the well built in 1970 was removed again. The new open space was henceforth reserved for pedestrians.

In the 21st century, the square became known primarily for increasing street crime and as a meeting place for the drug scene .

From 2019 to probably 2021, extensive modernization measures will take place on Berliner Platz, but especially in its immediate vicinity (bank promenade, Wupperbrücke, station forecourt). The measures affecting the square include, among other things, the demolition of the kiosk and pavilion as well as the construction of benches and outdoor catering .
