The Kolkmannhaus is a former commercial building or department store in Wuppertal - Elberfeld , which is now used as an office building . It is the most famous business incubator in the city.

history

The building Hofaue 51/53 in Elberfelder Straße Hofaue , a formerly important shopping street in the textile history of Wuppertal, was built in 1898 and housed important textile trading companies at that time. In the front part of the building complex were manufactured goods, haberdashery and fabric stores, in the rear part curtain and clothing factories were used for tailoring and weaving.

In the 1920s, under the owner Max (Maximilian) Lohmann 1920 (-1933), an antiques and art shop was housed in the building, so that it was also known as the Lohmannhaus . In 1950, the top manufacturer Otto Kolkmann acquired the building after which it is named today.

The three-storey commercial building was built in skeleton construction and has a historic facade . On July 30, 1984, the Kolkmannhaus was placed under monument protection and entered in the list of monuments of the city of Wuppertal. However, the scope of protection is limited to the exterior of the building.

At the beginning of the 1990s, the building management of the city of Wuppertal acquired the building and has been renting it out since a major renovation that took place until 1999.

Todays use

Today the Kolkmannhaus is a station on the Textile Route in Wuppertal and a cultural start-up center. It is the seat of the Bergische Musikschule , the Neuen Kunstverein Wuppertal (originally a gallery in the Kolkmannhaus ) and a restaurant on the ground floor. The Institute for Art and Design of the Bergische Universität Wuppertal and the MipsHAUS Institute are also located here.
