history
The history of the Bergische Musikschule began on December 1, 1945 with the establishment of the district conservatory for music in the neighboring town of Haan . The opening ceremony did not take place until June 15, 1946. In 1948 the extension to the Bergisches Landes-Konservatorium took place; it was supported by the cities of Wuppertal, Remscheid , Solingen and the two districts of Düsseldorf-Mettmann and Rhein-Wupper. As early as 1954, Haan proved to be not attractive enough as the sole location for the conservatory, and it was relocated to Wuppertal. In the following year Martin Stephani took over the management of the Bergische Conservatory in the " Villa Frowein " in Wuppertal, Briller Straße 2.
The Bergische Musikschule was founded in 1965, with Ingo Schmitt as acting headmaster and Reinhard Becker as his deputy. In the following year the youth music school of the city of Wuppertal was established. In 1968 the youth music school was merged with the conservatory to form the Bergisches Landeskonservatorium, but in 1972 the conservatories in North Rhine-Westphalia were dissolved again and both institutions were separated. The vocational branch was integrated into the State University of Music Rhineland (Cologne-Düsseldorf-Aachen-Wuppertal) , the Bergische Musikschule became the sponsorship of the city of Wuppertal. During this time approx. 3500 students were taught by 153 teachers.
In 1973, Martin Beutel took over the school management, and the sponsorship group was also founded. In the period that followed, further ensembles, departments and branches were set up. Further steps in the following years included the establishment of the "rock office", new teaching programs for adults and work with the disabled. In 1995 Bernd Mischke took over the school management.
In 1997 the organizational structure of the school changed and six music school districts were established. In 1999 the move to the Kolkmann-Haus in Elberfeld City took place as the central building next to some branches. A first musical of his own took place, numerous followed in the years to come. In 2002 the first own music school festival took place. In 2005 the school celebrated its 40th anniversary with 40 concerts, including a gala concert with around 400 participants.
Since 2007, the cooperation with primary schools has been expanded, the project "Every child an instrument" (JeKi) started. In the same year, the school received the first of five prizes from the “Sparda Music Network” for pioneering collaborations with other institutions. In 2011 Renate Schlomski took over the management of the school. Raphael Amend has been the director of the Bergische Musikschule since December 2017.
A first concert as part of the “SingPause” project took place in 2013. Twelve schools with more than 2,600 participants are now involved. The first JEKISS school singing also took place. In the following year, a specialist support for inclusion was set up. In 2015 the school celebrated its 50th anniversary with events. The JeKits project began in 2016.
