Jennifer Gray
Jennifer Gray (born March 26, 1960 in New York City ) is an American actress . She became known worldwide as Frances "Baby" Houseman in the hit dance film Dirty Dancing in 1987 .
Life
Jennifer Gray is the daughter of actor Joel Gray ( Cabaret , Chicago ) and the granddaughter of US comedian and musician Mickey Katz . Gray made her debut in James Foley's Reckless as a partner to Daryl Hannah . Shortly thereafter, she starred alongside Richard Gere and Nicolas Cage in the gangster film The Cotton Club by Francis Ford Coppola . Gray then worked in the films The Winner - American Flyers with Kevin Costner and Ferris makes blue with Matthew Broderick , before her breakthrough in 1987 with the dance film Dirty Dancing , which also earned her a nomination for the Golden Globe .
After a nose operation, Gray went through a career slump in the early 1990s. This procedure was intended to bring her appearance into line with a conventional ideal of beauty. After that, however, she was hardly recognizable and apparently no longer corresponded to her previous role type. She later commented on this as follows:
“I went into the operating theater a celebrity - and came out anonymous. It was like being in a witness protection program or being invisible. I remember going to a restaurant where I had been going for years. I ran into people I knew and would say, 'Hey.' Nothing. I'll always be this once-famous actress nobody recognizes [...] because of a nose job. "
“I went into the operating room as a celebrity - and came out as a stranger. It was like being in a witness protection program, or like being invisible. I remember going to a restaurant that I had been to for years. I met people I knew and said 'Hey'. Nothing. I will always be this once famous actress who nobody recognizes [...] because of a nose operation. "
After her operation, Gray was unable to build on her earlier successes. To date, she has mostly appeared in American television films. She had one of her few appearances in international cinema productions in 2000 alongside Gwyneth Paltrow and Ben Affleck in the film drama Bounce - A Chance for Love . In 2010 she won the American dance show Dancing with the Stars with dance partner Derek Hough . From 2014 to 2017 she played the lead role of Judy Meyers in the Amazon series Red Oaks .
In 2018 she was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.
Gray was dating Matthew Broderick and Johnny Depp for some time . She married actor and screenwriter Clark Gregg on July 21, 2001 and gave birth to a daughter on December 3, 2001 in Los Angeles .
