James Foley (born December 28, 1953 in Brooklyn , New York ) is an American director .

James Foley grew up in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from the University at Buffalo with degrees in Pre-Medical and Psychoanalysis . He actually planned to become a psychologist, but instead discovered his talent for staging. He began studying film in New York while in the evenings he went to a psychiatric clinic to work as a doctor. He later moved to the University of Southern California film school .

After the two student shorts Silent Night and November , he was able to make his directorial debut in 1984 with the help of Hal Ashby , the teenage drama Reckless, based on a script by debutant Chris Columbus . The main characters were Aidan Quinn and Daryl Hannah .

His second film was On Short Distance , a drama starring Sean Penn and Christopher Walken . Penn's wife at the time, Madonna, was impressed by Foley's work and hired him for several projects: the music videos for Live to Tell (the theme from Short Distance ), True Blue and the hit Papa Don't Preach, as well as the direction of the comedy film Who's That Girl .

The Jim Thompson - novelization After Dark, My Sweet , at its screenplay earned him recognition from the critics.

In 1992, Glengarry Glen Ross , a film adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize- winning play by David Mamet , had a whole squad of well-known actors in front of the camera. Including Al Pacino , who received an Oscar nomination and won the Oscar for Women's Scent that same year . In 1995 Pacino also worked in Foley's directorial work 25 Cents .

In 1996, in which Foley brought the rather unknown John Grisham filming The Chamber to the cinema, he also directed Fear with the still unknown actors Mark Wahlberg and Reese Witherspoon . Wahlberg also took on a part in Foley's next film The Corruptor .

After a four-year hiatus, the 2003 thriller Confidence was directed by Foley. After another four years of abstinence from the screen, Seduction of a Stranger with Bruce Willis and Halle Berry started in the cinemas in April 2007 . This was followed primarily by directing work for television, above all a dozen episodes of House of Cards from 2013 to 2015. In 2017, the film adaptation of the novel, Fifty Shades of Gray - Dangerous Love , was published, the sequel he also directed and the 2018 appeared.

James Foley's brother Jerry is also a film director.
