occupation

Who's That Girl is an American screwball comedy from 1987. James Foley directed and written by Andrew Smith and Ken Finkleman . Madonna and Griffin Dunne can be seen in the lead roles.

action

The plot of the film is the story of the street girl Nikki Finn, who is falsely accused of murdering his friend and therefore goes to prison. After her release, Nikki meets a man who tries to make sure she gets on her bus back to Philadelphia and persuades him to help her apprehend those responsible for her detention. In search of the cause, they fall in love with each other.

background

After the failure of her 1986 film Shanghai Surprise , Madonna decided to apply for another comedy film called Slammer , which was later renamed Who's That Girl . However, she had to convince both Warner Bros. and the movie's producers that she was the right person for the project. Madonna successfully suggested her friend James Foley as a director. Filming began in New York City in October 1986 and lasted until March 1987. Production ceased in December due to snowfall in New York. Madonna used the time to work on her next tour and the film's soundtrack .

reception

The film was released on August 7, 1987 and was a box office flop . In the first week he only grossed $ 2.5 million. The final domestic total was $ 7.3 million with a budget between $ 17 million and $ 20 million. Critics have been very disappointed with the film and Foley's direction. It received an average rating of 29 percent on the Rotten Tomatoes website , based on 14 reviews. For the lexicon of international film it is a "comedy based on patterns from screwball comedies, which, despite amusing script ideas, lacks wit, originality and a convincing leading actress." In 1988 Madonna received the Golden Raspberry for the second time in a row as worst actress.

However, Madonna's Who's That Girl world tour was a commercial hit with total sales of $ 25 million and an audience of 1.5 million. The soundtrack also had commercial success: the title song of the same name became Madonna's sixth number one on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. In 1988 it was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for best film song and for the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media . However, the song El Coco Loco (So, So Bad) from the film, written by Coati Mundi, was also nominated for the Golden Raspberry in 1987.
