Stephen Bray
Stephen Pate Bray (born December 23, 1956 in Detroit , Michigan ) is an American songwriter , drummer and record producer from Detroit. Bray is best known for working with Madonna . He owns the "Saturn Sound Recording Studios" and the "Soultone Records Recording Studios".
biography
Bray met Madonna at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor . He studied music, she studied dance . A friendship quickly began between the two of them. They moved to New York City , where they became members of the band Breakfast Club . It was then that they began to write their own songs. When Madonna got a recording deal from Sire Records , their business cooperation began.
The songs that Bray and Madonna composed often followed the same structure. In it, the second chorus and the bridge were repeated over and over before the song ended. Their collaboration ended after the production of Madonna's album Like a Prayer .
Bray made his Broadway debut in 2005 as a composer and lyricist for the Broadway version of Alice Walker's book The Color Purple . He was nominated for a Tony Award for his work on the play . In 2016 he received a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album as the author of the play .
He is married to the film producer Stephanie Allain , who helped produce the films Hustle & Flow and Black Snake Moan .
