action

The film is set in Shanghai in 1937 during the partial occupation of China by Japan . The unsuccessful tie seller and soldier of fortune Glendon Wasey lurks in the city harbor for an opportunity to leave the country for home. He met the mission nurse Gloria , who promised him to organize the passage for a favor. Wasey eventually makes that deal.

Glendon soon realizes that the assignment also has certain pitfalls. He is supposed to help Gloria find a large amount of opium . The drug was lost a year earlier when crook Walter Faraday tried to smuggle it out of the country. During the following film plot, Wasey went through a winding and dangerous adventure in which he had to fear for his life more than once. At first Gloria seems to be playing a double game with him, then the church representative at Gloria's side reveals himself to be Faraday, who was believed to be dead, who also seeks opium and finally the couple is hunted by various gangsters from the Shanghai underworld.

In the end, Glendon and Gloria manage to defy all dangers and take the fraudsters by surprise. They become a couple and return to the USA by ship.
