Paul Freeman (born January 18, 1943 in Barnet , Hertfordshire ) is a British actor and producer .

Life

Freeman began his career in the theater. He was a member of the Royal National Theater and the Royal Shakespeare Company . In 1974 he started his own theater company called the Joint Stock Theater Company . In 1978 Freeman made his first notable appearance in front of the camera with the miniseries Life of Shakespeare . The British made his cinema debut in 1980 in Rififi on Good Friday with Bob Hoskins . In 1981 he was seen alongside Christopher Walken and Tom Berenger in The Dogs of War . In the same year he achieved his international breakthrough with the role of Rene Belloq in the first part of the Indiana Jones film series Raiders of the Lost Ark . Freeman played mostly evil roles in his films. In addition, he was twice in front of the camera alongside Simon Pegg in a comedy, in 2007 in the crime thriller Hot Fuzz and in 2012 in the horror comedy Die terrible fear of the terrible .
