action

Former US Air Force Colonel Charles "Chappy" Sinclair and his friends Leichmann, Palmer, and the Japanese Horikoshi run an air show with classic warplanes from World War II ; in their show they simulate historical air battles. One day when Chappy receives news that his younger friend Ramon Morales has crashed his jet over the Gulf of Mexico and was killed in the process, he is called up to Lethridge Air Force Base in Brownsville, Texas, where he finds the remains of Ramon's plane should investigate. Chappy mentions that Ramon has another sister named Anna and that his father is the mayor of a small Peruvian village. During the investigation it turns out that Ramon was actually shot down while carrying several kilograms of cocaine in the auxiliary tanks of his jet .

In the Peruvian village of Izquitos, the former Nazi Gustav Kleiss runs a drug cartel and holds Ramon's sister Anna hostage. Kleiss is secretly supported by USAF General Simms. He promised himself a decent pension through the coup after he was informed that his airbase is about to close. When the cartel starts smuggling the drugs into the United States with the help of Simms , Anna escapes her prison and sneaks on board the cargo plane. Arriving in Lethridge, she meets Chappy, who informs her that Ramon has been killed. Anna asks him for help because Kleiss has ordered her father and all the villagers to be killed within four days. Chappy meets with DEA agent Warren Crawford, who assures him that he will help if Anna can show the exact location of the cartel.

In the middle of an air show, Chappy's P-38 Lightning was badly damaged after Leichmann's Bf-109 was sabotaged and loaded with live ammunition. Chappy only manages to avoid death through a well-executed emergency landing. Chappy realizes that someone is trying to get rid of him from the Air Force. He and his team rush to Anna, who gives them the location of Kleiss' cartel. This information is leaked to Agent Crawford, who cannot find anything suspicious on the surveillance cameras. After Ramon's funeral, Chappy and his friends decide to fly to Peru without any official support. Before that, Chappy can convince the air show promoter Stockman to give them the four old fighter planes and promises him to bring the machines back without a scratch. For this mission, the aircraft will be retrofitted with laser-guided missiles, which will hit the targets that Anna is to illuminate with lasers on site.

When Anna and Stockman land in Peru, they discover that Anna's landlord Tee Vee has secretly snuck on board the plane as a stowaway. The mission is ultimately endangered when Tee Vee is caught by the cartel and their laser sights are taken from them. Kleiss then orders his fighter planes to be launched so that they can fetch the four veterans from the sky. While the four flying aces succeed in fending off the enemy jets with ingenious tricks, Anna penetrates into the prison at the same time and manages to free Tee Vee and then retrieve the laser aiming devices. Meanwhile Palmer's Spitfire is hit by an enemy plane and crashes, but Chappy finally manages to destroy the drug factory. When General Simms tries to get off a US Air Force transport plane with $ 50 million worth of drugs, Warren's DEA helicopters arrive to aid the Aces. After some fighting, Anna helps the villagers and puts them safely in a church, only to find out that tons of explosives have been placed there. Before the explosion breaks out, Anna and the villagers can flee. The drug lord is killed.

Chappy and Horikoshi have now caught up with Simms and are hot on his heels. After Horikoshi's Mitsubishi Zero was badly damaged, he launched a kamikaze attack and destroyed the cargo plane. Finally, Kleiss intervened in the action with a prototype of the Me 263 and shot Leichmann, who was able to save himself in time. However, Chappy can outmaneuver Kleiss and destroy the prototype. Before that, Kleiss gets out of his jet and parachutes into the jungle, where he meets Anna and tries to bribe her. But without realizing it, Kleiss steps into a trap and dies.

Back in Texas, Chappy, Anna and the surviving aces celebrate their victory over a barbecue evening. Stockman informs Chappy that the Air Force has given him a fleet of mothballed F-86 Sabers so that he will keep quiet about the incident with the cartel. Chappy also gets the P-38 Lightning as a present. In honor of Horikoshi he decides to name his P-38 "Rising Sun".

"Routinely staged, effective action film that conjures up a fatal ideal of masculinity that is not defused even by comedic interludes, but is depicted heroically beyond the pain threshold."
