The Devil's Bill (Original title: The Devil's Arithmetic ) is an American drama from 1999 . Directed by Donna Deitch , the screenplay was written by Robert J. Avrech based on a novel by Jane Yolen .

Hannah Stern currently lives in the United States as a teenager. At a Jewish family festival, she is miraculously transported back to the time of the Second World War . In 1942 she lived in a small town in Poland under the name Chaya Abramowicz . Your parents are no longer alive.

One day Stern is deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau together with other Jews , where she spends a few days. Many of her friends die during this time. After her return to the present, Stern understands Jewish history better.

Reviews

Film-Dienst wrote that the film was "a serious attempt to bring recent history to an inexperienced audience, but it was not entirely successful because the low production budget forced some concessions" .

Awards

Donna Deitch and Robert J. Avrech won the Daytime Emmy in 2000 ; the film was nominated in two other categories for the same award. Kirsten Dunst was nominated for the Young Artist Award in 2000. Robert J. Avrech was nominated for the 2000 Writers Guild of America Award and the Nebula Award . The film received the Golden Reel Award from the Motion Picture Sound Editors in 2000 and was nominated in another category for the same award.

The film was shot in Toronto and Lithuania . It was produced as a television film, but in Germany it was shown in selected cinemas from January 2000. It was released direct to video in Argentina in January 2003.
