Absentia is an American television series that premiered on September 25, 2017 on a number of European branches of the pay-TV channel AXN . The main role is played by Stana Katić , who also acts as executive producer . The series of thirty episodes so far has been shot mainly in Bulgaria . The title is derived from the Latin term in absentia , which means "in absence".

The second season ran from March 26 to May 28, 2019 on AXN and started in Germany on June 14 on Prime Video .

On July 2, 2019, AXN announced that it had ordered a third season. It was initially published on Prime Video on July 17, 2020 in English with German subtitles.

The FBI -Agentin Emily Byrne, who are looking after the most notorious serial killers Boston is, disappears and is presumed dead. The banker Conrad Harlow, the prime suspect in her case, but to whom she could not prove anything, is held responsible for her death and imprisoned for murder .

Six years later, Emily is found seriously injured in a cabin in the woods. She has no memory of her disappearance and therefore goes to Dr. Daniel Vega, an FBI psychologist and profiler . She realizes that her previous life practically no longer exists: her colleague and husband Nick Durand had given up looking for her after a while and married Alice. She tries to be friendly with Emily, but sees her as a competitor and fears that she will lose Nick's affection. Emily's stepbrother Jack used to work as a surgeon . Due to the alleged death of his sister, he became an alcoholic , lost his license and now sells medical equipment. Emily's nine-year-old son Flynn, who was a toddler when his mother disappeared, no longer recognizes her and feels uncomfortable around her.

While Emily has to find her way in her new situation, a new series of murders shakes the city. Several clues indicate that she is the perpetrator. Emily escapes and continues to investigate on her own, as she is sure that there is a connection between these murders and their disappearance. Her husband is also investigating and is certain that there must be a mole in the department to whom Emily is responsible. Meanwhile, Special Agent Radford leads the search for the agent. He's her boss and has a pretty good relationship with her, but he's determined to find her.

Cast and dubbing

The German synchronization of the series will be done at Interopa Film in Berlin . Jürgen Wilhelm directs the dialogue and also wrote the dialogue books for the first four episodes; Angela Ringer has now taken on this task .

The episode begins with several year old videos showing the couple Nick and Emily with their young son Flynn. In the present, it is explained that Emily was kidnapped and pronounced dead six years ago. Conrad Harlow, a banker Emily suspected of multiple murders, was charged and convicted of her death. Nick has now married another woman named Alice. He receives a call from Harlow, who describes the way to a cabin in the forest. There he finds Emily, who is locked in a water tank and threatens to drown. He manages to free her and takes her to the hospital. She is severely malnourished and her body shows severe signs of abuse. In addition, she has no memories of the events of recent years. She suffers from paranoia and PTSD . When Alice and Flynn visit her, she is upset because her son does not recognize her and her husband has a new partner. She finds accommodation with her brother Jack and is transferred to Dr. Referred to Vega, who is supposed to treat her amnesia. She only remembers flower names, which puts Nick on the trail of the human trafficker Robert Semerov. Emily is investigating him, and he often names his victims after flowers. Conrad Harlow is released from prison because Emily is still alive. The Boston Police Department works with the FBI to catch Semerov's killer. Investigator Tommy Gibbs meets with Kelly Price, who claims Emily had an argument with Semerov on a bridge two weeks ago. That's why he interrogates Emily, but lets her go. Meanwhile, she has to fight panic attacks and hallucinations from her masked kidnapper. She also tries to get closer to her son, which initially doesn't work. She shortly breaks into Harlow, who denies having kidnapped her. A little later she is arrested for the break-in and questioned again by Gibbs, but then released. Nick finds out that Kelly Price's real name is Regina and works for both Semerov and a mole in the FBI. He and Emily decide to track down the mole together when Gibbs receives a call to learn that Harlow was found stabbed to death in his swimming pool.

Emily admits to Dr. Vega that she has visions of a bleeding eye all the time. After her session, she goes on a go-kart track with Flynn . It is there that he begins to feel comfortable in her presence for the first time. He has an accident but is not seriously injured. Alice argues with Nick about this and tells him that he shouldn't have left Flynn alone with Emily. At the police station, Gibbs expresses his suspicion that Emily may have had something to do with Semerov's murder. Nick defends them and asks Gibbs to collect clues about the mole, which he approves. A little later, Nick tells Adam that the clues point to her colleague Derek Crown, Adam doesn't want to know about it. Because of this, he breaks into Harlow's house with Emily, where they find footprints that belong to Adam. Shortly thereafter, Emily got into an argument with Jack, because he was annoyed by the journalists in front of his house. During their argument, Jack confesses to Emily that he is an alcoholic and that she has been adopted. Emily moves to a motel in anger because of this, where Nick is waiting for her. He is supposed to arrest her because Gibbs has found the tape of a surveillance camera on which she is supposed to be seen in front of Harlow's house on the night of the murder. Emily admits to Nick that she was outside his house that night to watch Alice because she wanted to see if she was taking good care of Flynn. Nick is touched and leaves without arresting Emily. Instead, he goes to Adam and asks him directly if he knows anything about Regina or the murder of Harlow. All he replies is that Nick is being blinded by Emily and that he should be careful. During the night, Emily breaks into Adam and finds his diary with bloodied eyes drawn.

Nick goes to Emily's motel and warns her that the Boston police are looking for her on an arrest warrant. She can convince him that it is not she but Adam who is involved in Semerov's death. The two then have sex with each other, when Nick briefly goes into the bathroom, she flees to investigate further on her own. Nick is suspended by Adam for helping Emily escape, and Nick is in trouble with Alice, who suspects that he slept with Emily. Meanwhile, Gibbs interrogates both Jack and Emily's father, Warren, who was also a former FBI agent. The latter receives a call from Emily after his interrogation, who is desperate and doesn't know what to do. Warren encourages her to keep going. That's why she kidnaps her manager and tells Nick this on her cell phone. So he and Gibbs go straight to find Emily. At the place where Adam is being held by Emily, he confesses to her that he worked with Semerov and gave Kelly Price a new identity. But he denies having anything to do with her kidnapping. The bleeding eye is a certain spot that he doesn't know but is feverishly looking for. That's why the drawings were in his diary. Nick and Gibbs finally arrive, whereupon Emily flees again. The shackled Adam is killed by an unknown archer.

Emily goes to Dr. Vega to find out what that bleeding eye meant. With his help, she eventually remembers that the blood eye is a tree that she played on with her friends in childhood. Meanwhile, Derek is named the new captain and ends Nick's suspension. Alice realizes that she is pregnant, but her relationship with Nick is at a low point because she is convinced of his fling. Meanwhile, Emily maintains contact with Nick on an old, untraceable cell phone. She's still on the run and is recognized when she gets on a bus. It finally reaches Nottingham Park. Meanwhile, Jack argues with Warren and blames him for failing to persuade his sister to surrender. Nick finally finds out with Jack's help where Emily might be. He and Gibbs find her in the park, where she unearthed a skeleton in the Blood Eye . She escapes when she sees the two of them approaching; she still manages to take the dead man's pacemaker with her. Nick and Gibbs pursue her, but she manages to jump into a lake and swim to the other bank. She hides in a truck and is relieved when the driver gets in and drives away. Suddenly the truck comes to a stop and the driver aims a shotgun at her.

The truck driver knows Emily from the news, but decides not to hand her over to the authorities, but to help her. He brings them back to Boston, where she breaks into Jack's house and a mobile phone in a cornflakes sets -Packung. Then she wants to use his laptop, as he as a doctor has access to patient data in order to find out the identity of the pacemaker owner. While looking for the laptop, she finds a letter from the hospital management stating that her brother will be discharged due to inappropriate behavior and unexcused absenteeism. On his computer she finds several bondage and breath control films, as well as videos of young women named after flowers. Meanwhile, the police find out that the skeleton must belong to one of Harlow's victims, who were suspected of always removing the murdered woman's eyelids . Therefore, the investigators come to the conclusion that Emily must be Harlow's accomplice. Nick interrogates Nash, who was the first to investigate the murders. He remembers that Emily was the only one to suspect Harlow. In addition, a witness at the time died shortly after Emily spoke to him. The investigators go to Jack's house, where Gibbs finds the videos, and they also determine that Jack has deposited unusually large amounts of money in his account. It turns out that Jack embezzled hospital finances. The FBI finds six other bodies and concludes that Emily committed the murders and that Harlow attached them. Meanwhile, Emily finds her brother in a bar, where he meets with an escort lady. Emily follows the woman to the club where she works and questions her. She is seen by the club owner, flees and is shot. Badly injured, she drives to her mother's grave, calls Jack and asks him to come to her. Emily wakes up in a room, Jack has healed her injury. He denies being involved in the Harlow murders. Emily believes him, the two now want to find out who the pacemaker belonged to. Jack finds out that the owner is a certain Dr. Shen who worked at the orphanage where Emily grew up. She goes to Chinatown to see Shen's brother Erik. He tells her that due to controversial studies, Shen was fired from MIT and then employed at the orphanage. His documents are in an archive, which Emily visits. Meanwhile, at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, Jack tells that the operation he performed on his sister helped him overcome his addiction. Shortly afterwards he is arrested and questioned by Gibbs, but does not speak. When Emily is listening to one of Shen's tapes, she is attacked from behind and dragged into a van . This belongs to two men who want the bounty on Emily's head. At a red light, she manages to get out and steal a car. She listens to the tape again and listens to the name Charles. This was a boy she beat up in the orphanage for no reason. It turns out that Dr. Shen conducted traumatizing experiments on the children. At the end of the episode, Nick wants to visit Alice and Flynn, who are staying with Alice's sister. The house was broken into and Alice and Flynn kidnapped. Nick finds a video of Emily on Alice's cell phone saying she loves him and will be with him soon.

Nick is now also convinced that Emily is the killer and kidnapped Alice and Flynn. That's why he appeals in the news to her to release the two of them. Gibbs pursues Emily, but cannot catch up with her as she escapes on a departing train. She reads a book she stole from Charles and sees several drawings of a pitchfork in it. She gets out and breaks into Erik's restaurant to look for clues about his brother. She notices that she has read the name of the manufacturer of the restaurant aquarium several times: In a sketch in Charles Buch, earlier in the orphanage and in the hut in which she was held. She breaks into a hotel and researches the company, when she is discovered, she gets into a van and escapes. She calls Jack and asks him to find out who ordered the water tank she was trapped in. Meanwhile, Alice realizes that Flynn has disappeared. She finds him and frees him from the tank before he dies. They want to flee, but Alice is overwhelmed by the masked man with a tranquilizer arrow. Nick, who wore a bulletproof vest and was therefore uninjured, interviewed Charles with Gibbs. He tells them that a friend of his is Dr. Shen hurt and that the room where the experiments were performed on the children smelled of candy. These clues lead them to a house where a molasses tank exploded years ago . Jack gives Emily the address the water tank was delivered to and tells her that she ordered it seven years ago. She finds a photo in the house and takes it with her. She escapes in time when she realizes that Nick and Gibbs are also there. When Nick learns from Derek that Harlow had an alibi for several murders and, according to testimony, a female accomplice, he now thinks Emily is Harlow's mentor. There is also a costume shop across the street that sells the same mask that Emily said her kidnapper wore. With the help of the photo, she finds a forest hut. She calls Nick and tells him to come here alone. She enters the hut through a hidden trap door.

Emily has a panic attack and is attacked by the masked man. She comes to in a room with her unconscious Alice, a television and a camera. The man is talking to Alice on TV. A flashback explains that Emily was dying to be adopted at the orphanage. She therefore pretended to be friendly and well behaved, but that was of no use, since her psychological report prevented an adoption. Therefore, she secretly exchanged her report with that of the masked man and was adopted. The man, however, was led by Dr. Shen selected as a test subject. He wanted to carry out experiments on children with aggressive traits. He thought that through dire trauma in childhood, people could be raised to be obedient, ruthless hit men . Because of this, the man had to go through years of ordeal while Emily was Dr. Shen narrowly escaped. In the present, Emily is shaken and apologizes to the man who takes off his mask. The killer isn't a man at all, he's Laurie, whose real name is Logan. With Harlow's help, she murdered Dr. Shen and orders Emily to kill Alice with the promise that she will then release Flynn. After some hesitation, Emily agrees, but Nick arrives at the hut on time. Alice wakes up and escapes with the two of them and Flynn, but they are followed by Laurie. Nick is shot by Laurie, who in turn is followed by Emily. She can still injure Emily with a knife before she is drowned by her. The FBI arrests Emily but later releases her. Derek publicly declares Laurie a serial killer. Nick is visited by Emily in the hospital, the two reconcile and agree not to revive their relationship since they are no longer the same people as they were six years ago. A few days later Flynn celebrates his birthday, Emily and Gibbs are also invited and he flirts with her. Emily notices a leaking water pipe in the kitchen and has another panic attack. As she mops the floor, she has a vision of the dead Conrad Harlow, who was murdered by her.

Emily is still trying to find out details about her past. That's why she takes drugs that are supposed to improve her memory. She is now in a relationship with Tommy, who helps her with her research. She receives her adoption file from him, which leads her to a certain Lester Mcnair. In the meantime, Alice has a miscarriage and decides to go back to work as a therapist immediately after this experience. Your colleague Dr. Oduwale has sessions with Flynn so that he can process the events of the previous season. Jack has found a new job, not as a doctor, but as a paramedic . Valerie warns her and says that she is constantly being followed and that someone is trying to kill her. In addition, Emily regularly receives injections at the Boston Mercy Hospital, which she can no longer remember afterwards. Emily is angry about these statements, believing them to be lies, and tells Valerie to leave. This collapses shortly afterwards because she is diabetic . Emily injects her insulin and goes to the Boston Mercy to check Valerie's claims. Meanwhile, Derek and Julianne clash because of their different ways of working, and Flynn is frightened when he tries to visit Emily and meets Valerie there. So Emily decides to go back to work for the FBI to investigate these serial acts. Tommy does not like this because he now thinks that Emily is no longer necessary. Emily destroys any records that identify Valerie as her birth mother and attends her autopsy with Agent Cal Issac. Meanwhile, Jack receives a reprimand from his supervisor for saving the life of a patient with an unapproved tracheotomy . He seeks consolation in Alice, who feels neglected by Nick. This interrogates Colin Spencer, the chairman of the Patriotic Guardians , who gives him the name Tyler Brandon Mills. Nick and Julianne go to see his parents, who tell them that their son has serious psychological problems. Tyler has already fled because he suspected the FBI was going to speak to his parents.

Tyler kills a man in his cabin and takes his daughter Elsie hostage. Julianne finds fan letters that a certain Liza Tutee has sent to Tyler. Rex kills him with a fentanyl injection and flees from Nick who is chasing him. The FBI decides not to tell the public about Rex's existence. Meanwhile, Warren is in an arcade with Flynn when he collapses and is hospitalized, but is able to leave shortly afterwards. Alice, Nick and Flynn invite Emily, Jack and Warren to dinner together, but Emily leaves after an argument. She gets the order from Derek to travel to Moldova with Cal , since Rex is probably there. While getting ready, she notices a connection between Rex and the drug company Catalyst Diagnostics . Derek lies to the press, saying that Nick killed Tyler while fleeing in self-defense. Nick is dissatisfied with this version of what happened, but has to submit to his manager and lie about the truth. In Moldova, Emily and Cal travel undercover as a wealthy businesswoman and bodyguard. Emily investigates a connection between Rex and the private military company Nightwatch . This monitors their employees around the clock with a chip in their arms. Cal meets his old partner Holt, who used to work for the company. Emily seduces Jacques, who tries to rape her , whereupon she knocks him down and removes the chip from his arm. Emily and Cal break into Nightwatch and find Rex, but are locked up by Jacques and his people. In the United States, Alice learns from her doctor that she will never have another child, adding to her already fragile relationship with Nick, which is why she contacts Dr. Oduwale discusses. Journalist Erica Lyle, who is with Derek, tells him that she's hiding something from the FBI, and that her Tyler's death appears suspicious. Derek promises her an interview with Nick so that she doesn't go public with her suspicion. He agrees on the condition that Derek helps Emily leave Moldova. There Emily and Cal manage to escape through an underground tunnel, but are then knocked down by two men.

Alice starts an affair with Jack, which Nick suspects but cannot prove. Emily and Cal eventually return to the United States, where Flynn and Nick are waiting for them. Nick explains to a stunned Emily that Tommy took his own life from the exhaust fumes in his car .

Emily and Cal continue investigating Catalyst Diagnostics when she spots the word Quill on Tommy's windshield . Cal finds out that Quill was a discontinued research project. He and Emily meet Ulf Maston, the project manager at the time. Quill should help people develop tremendous resilience in extreme stressful situations. This was supposed to be achieved with a serum, but the laboratory rats reacted extremely aggressively and violently after the injections, which is why the research was ended and the agent was never tested on humans. Ulf tells them that a behavioral psychologist named Dr. Lu Fang Shen was involved, but was released because he wanted to use human subjects. Emily responds to the name with another panic attack as Dr. Shen conducted cruel experiments on children at the orphanage where she grew up, as explained in the previous season. She is also shocked when Maston gives her photos of everyone involved and one of Dr. Shows Oduwale, her son's therapist.

Emily shares with Nick what she learned about Dr. Oduwale with and asks him to keep Flynn away from him. She asks Dr. Oduwale in his office and notices that he has the same painting on the wall as Rex in his house in Moldova. Dr. Oduwale finally admits to having given the serum to several people. However, it only had the desired effect on Rex, which is why Dr. Oduwale was tasked with killing the remaining test objects. Dr. Oduwale also worked with Laurie, who kidnapped Emily last season. This took Emily blood, with which Dr. Oduwale was finally able to perfect the serum. The episode ends with the shot of Emily delivering this message to Nick and Flynn.
