Samson and Delilah is a two-part television film that focuses on the fateful love story between the judge Samson and the Philistine noblewoman Delila . The film is based on a biblical story from ( Ri 13.1-16.31  EU ).

action

The Israelites are oppressed by the Philistines and exploited both materially and ideally. One day, old Mara will have a child whose gift is superhuman physical strength - Samson. Samson's mission to free his people crosses his path with the Philistine Delilah , who, on behalf of the king, is supposed to bring down the "savior of Israel". When he reveals to her the secret of his strength, which lies in his long hair, the clever noblewoman takes action.

background

Action, stunts, and lots of physical violence. Director Nicolas Roeg filmed the most fast-paced and, in terms of script, the least biblical film in the series “The Bible”. Thereby author Allan Scott created the culture of the Philistines, about which little is known. Only the actors Elizabeth Hurley and Dennis Hopper convince in their roles. As with Die Bibel - Josef and Die Bibel - Jakob , Eric Thal, a newcomer, played a leading role alongside Ethan Hawke and Max von Sydow in Snow, which falls on cedars .

Cinematographer Raffaele Mertes experimented a lot with handheld cameras. There are few shots and scenes with a camera crane and steadicam in this film .

criticism

"Directed by Nicolas Roeg, the film turns into a colorful historical painting that is more interested in the melodramatic conflict of passions than in the religious dimension."
