Da Vinci's Demons is an American - British historical series . Taking into account the known historical events, it is about the fictional youth of the inventor Leonardo da Vinci (played by Tom Riley ) in the Florence of the Renaissance, who later became famous . The television series is a co-production between the British broadcaster BBC and the US cable broadcaster Starz . The first broadcast took place on April 12, 2013 on Starz, while the German-language broadcast began on April 17, 2013 on the pay TV channel FOX .

Leonardo da Vinci, 25, is an Italian painter, sculptor, architect, and inventor living in Florence in the late 15th century . The illegitimate son of Lorenzo Medici's notary is way ahead of his time with his ideas and inventions. As a free thinker, he tries to fight against the lies of the church and against an elitist society. In Florence he begins to work for Lorenzo as a war engineer.

Production and broadcast

United States and United Kingdom

The first season was filmed at Bay Studios in Neath, Port Talbot and Swansea in Wales . The broadcast in the USA started on April 12, 2013 on the cable channel Starz following the Spartacus series finale and reached just over a million viewers, resulting in a target group rating of 0.4. The remaining episodes of the first season were shown until June 7, 2013. In the United Kingdom, the broadcast took place on April 19, 2013 on the British branch of Fox .

Shortly after the premiere, Starz extended the series for a second season, which premiered on March 22, 2014. After seven episodes broadcast in the second season, Starz announced the production of a third season. As the showrunner for the third season, John Shiban will replace the busy series creator Goyer. In July 2015, the broadcaster Starz announced that the series would end after the third season.

German-speaking area

After Fox International Channels had secured the worldwide rights to the broadcast in July 2012, the German-language branch announced that it would be broadcast shortly after the US world premiere. The German-language first broadcast of the first season finally began on April 17 and ended on June 12, 2013. The broadcast of the second season began on March 30, 2014 with a double episode and ended on June 1, 2014. The third season started in Germany on October 25, 2015 on FOX Channel.

For the German Free TV has Super RTL secured the broadcast rights. Seasons 1 and 2 were broadcast from April 1 to May 20, 2015.
