Alexander Siddig (born  November 21, 1965 in Sudan ) is a Sudanese - British actor , residing in England .

Life

In Sudan it is common for children to receive the names of their ancestors and their own father instead of a surname, which leads to very long names over the generations. His full name is Siddig El Tahir El Fadil El Siddig Abderahman Mohammed Ahmed Abdel Karim El Mahdi . His father, a brother of the former Sudanese Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi , is Sudanese, his mother is English and the sister of Malcolm McDowell . Siddig is the great-great-grandson of Mahdi Muhammad Ahmad , a central figure in the history of Sudan and the Islamic world .

Siddig had his most famous role to date as Dr. Julian Bashir in the US science fiction series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993–1999).

Alexander Siddig originally called himself just "Siddig", but had to rename himself to "Siddig el Fadil" when he moved to England . He later renamed himself “Alexander Siddig” because hardly anyone pronounced the name “el Fadil” correctly, according to Siddig.

In June 1997, Siddig married fellow Star Trek actor Nana Visitor . The marriage was divorced in April 2001. The change of his stage name coincided with the wedding and had the side effect that Siddig and Visitor were named one after the other in the opening credits of Deep Space Nine . Siddig and Visitor have a son.
