Doomsday - day of vengeance is a British science fiction - action thriller from 2008. Directed by Neil Marshall , who also wrote the screenplay.
action
In Scotland in 2008 the deadly killer virus Reaper (English: "Grim Reaper" ) rages . In the absence of an appropriate antidote and an impending pandemic, the UK government decides to declare martial law , isolate the area from the outside world and place it under quarantine . As an immediate measure, a gigantic, insurmountable steel wall is being built to prevent the infected from escaping to other parts of the country. In the midst of these chaotic times, a young mother manages to entrust her little girl Eden, along with her address, to a helicopter crew responsible for the evacuation. She herself remains behind. The inhabitants of the exclusion zone are left to their fate due to the ruthless action of the army, which no longer evacuates possible survivors. Anomie soon prevails in this sealed off infection area .
In 2035, people infected by the virus will be found again in London . Since elections are imminent, it is important to avoid panic among the population. After survivors had been discovered by satellite in Scotland for three years, the now adult elite soldier Eden Sinclair is tasked with looking for any immune serum that may be present . A special military unit led by Eden, made up of a handful of soldiers and two scientists, went to Glasgow to visit the former laboratory of Dr. Kanes up. There they encounter some survivors, but they are received with hostility. The expedition is fought by a cannibalistic group led by the punk Sol. During the fighting, the number of soldiers is greatly decimated and Eden is captured. With the help of Cally, the imprisoned daughter of the wanted Kane, she finally manages to escape. The two women meet two other survivors from their team, a soldier and a scientist. Together they continue the mission. Cally reveals herself as Sol's sister and leads the team to her father, Dr. Kane, who withdrew with other survivors to an old castle in the Highlands and ruled there as a despot over a society in medieval form.
It turns out that there is no cure for the Reaper virus. Once a scientist, Dr. Only by natural selection survived, Kane settled far from the big cities to avoid detection by the government. Eden, with Cally and a surviving scientist, both flees from Dr. Kane's henchmen and Sol's people to contact their former commanding officer, Bill Nelson.
Meanwhile, the situation in London changes when the Prime Minister becomes infected with the Reaper virus and then commits suicide, whereby state authority is passed to his representative Canaris. The ruthless politician has Eden's call traced so that he can determine their approximate whereabouts. He travels in a helicopter to meet the fighter, who in the meantime is engaged in a pursuit duel with Sol and his henchmen. In the end, she succeeds in killing Sol. After handing Cally Canaris over so that he can develop an immune serum from her blood , she visits the apartment of her deceased mother, whose address she has guarded for decades. There she is visited by her superior Nelson, to whom she hands over a video recording of Canaris, which she had previously recorded when Cally was handed over, and in which his inhuman attitude is expressed. After all, she stays in Scotland at her own request and drives to Sol's people to present them with the head of her leader. It is celebrated frenetically by the wild pack .

Reviews
James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film blends elements of Mad Max , The Rattlesnake, and I Am Legend . Trying to “cram” as much material as possible into the film era is confusing. The execution is a "mess". The film is typical for the theatrical releases in the “long winter” - “vomited” plot, no big stars, no real chances at the box office.
Dennis Harvey wrote in Variety magazine on March 17, 2008 that Marshall's intuitive sense of action made up for the lack of novelty in the script. The end is not very convincing, but allows a continuation . The technical skills of those involved and their humor would prevent the film from drifting into ridiculousness.
James O'Ehley noted on www.scifimoviepage.com that the film was shot in South Africa , where numerous "cheap B-movies" have been made. On the other hand, the "talented" director created two of the most exciting horror films in recent years with Dog Soldiers and The Descent .
Carsten Baumgardt wrote on www.filmstarts.de that Doomsday is ultra-uncompromising, painfully mass-incompatible genre cinema. The director unleash a high-speed festival of violence that overtakes many similar films in terms of speed and fun. No annoying touches of claim or subtext: just action, speed and madness let off the leash.
