action

season 1

The focus of the series is the gangster gang Peaky Blinders from Birmingham , consisting of members of a gypsy family and other close confidants. Thomas "Tommy" Shelby, cuts through with his ambition against his older brother Arthur Shelby Jr. the leader of this "family business", is traumatized by his experiences as a volunteer of the Great War in the Battle of the Somme , which he tried in opium to to forget. When a large shipment of British Army machine guns fell into his hands in 1919 , Winston Churchill became aware of the gang and asked Chief Inspector Chester Campbell to secure the weapons by all means. The recently formed IRA is also targeting weapons. The situation is further complicated by Tommy's sister Ada's love for his one-time comrade, communist agitator Freddie Thorne, who is also being persecuted by Chief Inspector Campbell. Despite all difficulties, Tommy continues to work on the expansion of the company and begins, without the blessing of the influential bookmaker, Billy Kimber, to manipulate horse racing and withdraw his bookmaker in order to make bigger profits from his own illegal betting shop. Meanwhile, Chief Inspector Campbell puts undercover agent Grace Burgess on the Peaky Blinders , who over time enjoys greater trust from Tommy and falls in love with him. In order to protect Tommy, without Tommy's blessing, she manages to find the weapons he was looking for by Winston Churchill and, in return, demands the withdrawal of Chief Inspector Campbell. Tommy, who now owns Shelby Brothers Ltd. who built up the third largest legal horse betting company in the country through the murder of Billy Kimber , can no longer trust Grace, which is why she decides to emigrate to the United States and has to shoot Chief Inspector Campbell before she leaves, as he himself in the beautiful Grace fell in love and does not approve of her love for a gangster.

season 2

In the second season, which starts two years later, the " Gypsies " under Tommy Shelby try to expand the influence of the Peaky Blinders on London . To do this, he allies himself with the local Jews , led by the bootlegger Alfie Solomons, and starts a war against the Italian betting shop operator Darby Sabini. Meanwhile, his old opponent Campbell, who has meanwhile been promoted to major , tries to force him to cooperate with the IRA on behalf of the British Crown to carry out an assassination attempt on a former officer of the Black and Tans . Tommy's aunt Polly Gray, treasurer of the company, falls into deep mourning for her two children, who were torn from her as a child. Tommy manages to find out that Polly's daughter died, and track down her son Michael, who later became the chief accountant of the company Shelby Company Ltd. becomes. Meanwhile, Grace Burgess returns from the United States and approaches Tommy again. The clashes between the Peaky Blinders and the London Italians escalate at the Epsom Racecourse , where Tommy carries out the attack on the officer requested by Major Campbell while his aunt Polly shoots Campbell and the Peaky Blinders pull Darby Sabini's bookmaker out of circulation. During these events, Tommy is revealed by Grace that she is pregnant by him, which is why he later decides to marry her.

season 3

The third season takes place around 1924. Thomas Shelby and the Peaky Blinders have now become wealthy businessmen by legal means and rule all of northern England alongside Birmingham and London . At the same time, however, they get caught up in an international intrigue initiated by high-ranking politicians and business representatives from the British upper class. The Peaky Blinders are supposed to supply scheming Russian monarchists with weapons for the fight against the ruling Bolsheviks ; it later emerges, however, that the delivery was being assassinated, giving the British government an excuse to break off diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union . At the same time, the Peaky Blinders have to fight against the rebellion of an Italian gang of gangsters in Birmingham. In the course of this argument, Tommy's wife Grace is shot, and the Peaky Blinders murder the Italian gang leader Vincente Changretta in return. Although the Peaky Blinders manage to assert themselves in all arguments, Tommy realizes that their enemies are too powerful. The season ends with his announcement that he has negotiated a "deal" with even higher-ranking officials without consulting his family, a deal that results in the arrest of his brothers Arthur and John, his aunt Polly and his cousin Michael.

Season 4

The fourth season begins with Tommy getting his relatives pardoned when their heads are literally stuck in the noose of the gallows rope. As a result, the Shelby family lived divided and disaffected in Birmingham and the surrounding area until Christmas 1925. However, a reconciliation takes place through a new external enemy: Luca Changretta, son of the gang leader Vincente Changretta, who was shot by the Peaky Blinders in the third season and a high-ranking member of the Sicilian Mafia from New York City , also known as the " Black Hand ", travels with several men to Birmingham for a vendetta to gradually take revenge on the Shelbys. For Tommy and his family there is only one strategy left to survive this vendetta: return to the working class Small Heath , where their ascent began and where they can protect themselves with sufficient allies; Tommy's brother John is murdered during the conflict. Meanwhile, Tommy learns that his secretary Lizzie Stark is expecting a child and will carry it to term. In a cooperation with the boss of the Chicago Mafia named Al Capone , Tommy succeeds in playing Changretta's men against him and having him murdered. He also murders the greedy black-maker Alfie Solomons, who allied himself with Changretta from behind and betrayed him during the clashes with the Italians in London and the Russian monarchists. At the end of the fourth season Tommy negotiates with the government that he means his relations in the fight against organized politically communist labor movements supported and thus the post of member of parliament of the Labor Party receives from Birmingham-South.

Season 5

The fifth season begins on Black Thursday and the beginning of the Great Depression. Since Michael Gray, as representative of the Shelby family in the United States, did not follow Tommy's instructions, the company loses a large part of its legally invested money and is forced to develop other business areas again. One possibility arises when Chinese gangsters make the offer to start selling seven tons of opium or heroin in the United States, as a large growth market is expected there. At the same time, the Billy Boys , a Scottish rival gang, begin a war against the Peaky Blinders . When Oswald Mosley , who is about to end his collaboration with the Labor Party and form the British Union of Fascists (BUF), turns to Tommy, this requires a new strategy from Tommy. It also turns out that Alfie Solomons is still alive. It ends with a failed assassination attempt on Mosley and the question of who is a traitor within the Shelby company. Tommy, who has visions of his dead wife Grace, is increasingly plagued by suicidal thoughts.

Historical background

The "Peaky Blinders"

The name of the production was inspired by a gang of rowdy petty criminals, the Peaky Blinders , who were actually up to mischief in Birmingham around 1890. It can be assumed that their name from the flat caps derived ( "peaked caps"), which carried the band members. However, the Brummagem Boys around the former pickpocket William "Billy" Kimber, who also controlled the lucrative horse betting from 1920, served as a model for the gangster gang of the series .

Production and soundtrack

The elaborate design of the series is characterized by minimalist images and slow motion. The mood of the series is reminiscent of a Western and the aesthetics of the fight scenes are reminiscent of Quentin Tarantino . The modern sounding soundtrack to the series uses the dark ballads of Nick Cave , the rough vocals of PJ Harvey and beats of the White Stripes . Even Tom Waits with his roaring voice is involved. Filming locations were Birmingham, Leeds and Liverpool . Anna Calvi is responsible for much of the music for Season 5.

Cast and dubbing

The German dubbing is produced under the dialogue direction by Dorothee Muschter and the dialogue book by Änne Troester and Dorothee Muschter at Interopa Film GmbH in Berlin.

criticism

Ursula Scheer from the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung thinks that “a solid idea is presented in a stylish way” in the series, although the story is full of clichés.

Harald Keller writes in the Frankfurter Rundschau that author Steven Knight knows how to turn the historical template into a gripping series narrative. He regrets, however, that “the producers did not want to rely on this strength”: “In the effort to produce impressive images, director Otto Bathurst affords some unreasonable exaggeration.” The poverty in the English poor and working-class neighborhoods is also downright picturesque and therefore unrealistic staged - "the aesthetic appeal diminishes the actual meaning," says Keller.
