Colm McCarthy

Colm McCarthy (born February 16, 1973 in Edinburgh ) is a British film director, screenwriter and film producer.

Life

After finishing school, McCarthy lived in Ireland for a few years and earned his living as a musician in punk rock bands. He did not attend a film school, but as a teenager he made short films and videos with friends using borrowed material. He learned to film in practice on the set . He came into the film business in Dublin in 1998 through an application as an intern in John Boorman's film The General . He got one of his first jobs when a lighting technician used him because of his height to illuminate actors for upcoming takes . He then stayed with the film as an errand boy and “girl for everything” and borrowed equipment over the weekend to make his own films and videos.

He shot his first own feature film "Outcast" in 2010, for which he also wrote the script together with his brother Tom K. McCarthy. The film was nominated for the BAFTA Award, Scotland in 2011 ( Audience Award ). He has since directed series for the BBC and British private broadcasters, mostly in series.
