The young Inspector Morse (Original title: Endeavor , on German "effort / exertion / effort," also the first name of the main character) is a British crime - television series , based on a figure of the writer Colin Dexter . It has been running on the British TV station ITV since 2012 , the German-language version on ZDFneo since 2017 . Shaun Evans plays the leading role of the criminal investigator Endeavor Morse . The series is the prequel to the television series Inspector Morse, Oxford Homicide Squad , which was broadcast by ITV from 1987 to 2000.

The series is about the beginnings of the later DI Endeavor Morse at the Oxford Criminal Police Department beginning in 1965. After dropping out at the University of Oxford , he first went to the Royal Corps of Signals as a decipherer . He then began his police career in Carshall-Newtown. From there, he and other colleagues are sent to Oxford to help the local police with a case. DI Fred Thursday of the Oxford City Police takes a liking to Morse's investigative work and joins his investigative team to solve capital crimes .

The series received mostly positive reviews. The references to the original series and the "refreshing retro charm" were praised, the series is described as clever, charming and an insider tip. The Focus writes that it is "solid crime thriller with a sympathetic investigator" and notes that lead actor Shaun Evans, contrary to all fears of fans of the original series, "does his job [...] very well".

In a 2018 survey by the British magazine Radio Times, “The Young Inspector Morse” was ranked fourth among the most popular British crime series behind the cult series Inspector Morse (1987-1993, 1995-2000). The Lewis series (2006-2015), also based on motifs by Colin Dexter, reached number 12.
