Dakota Blue Richards (born April 11, 1994 in South Kensington , London ) is a British actress . Recognition she received for her role in the film The Golden Compass , an adaptation of the novel of Philip Pullman's His Dark material - trilogy , in which she embodies the main character Lyra Belacqua. The film opened in German cinemas on December 6, 2007. Richards has played the role of Franky Fitzgerald, an androgynous outsider , in the British television series Skins since the fifth season, which began in January 2011 .

Dakota Richards was selected in June 2006 from ten thousand applicants for the lead role in The Golden Compass , who had come to auditions in Oxford , Cambridge , Kendal and Exeter . She was also one of the two chosen by the author Philip Pullman from the 40 favored applicants that had been sent to him by the casting team. According to his own account, Richards became aware of the castings through a message on Newsround , a children's news program on the BBC .
