Reign of Fire is an American-British-Irish fantasy - action movie directed by Rob Bowman , in which the world of an ancient fire-breathing species dragon is conquered. The quarreling leaders of the human resistance are portrayed by Christian Bale and Matthew McConaughey . The film was shown for the first time in Germany on July 28, 2002 as part of the Fantasy Film Festival .

2008: Quinn Abercromby is a 12 year old student in London . As he does almost every day, he visits his mother Karen, who is the manager of a civil engineering project for the underground construction under the city streets, at work. But this time something strange happens: the workers find a mysterious cavity and Quinn climbs into it. In the cave behind it, which has been closed for ages, he frightens a huge creature from centuries of deep sleep, which, breathing fire, makes its way to the surface. Karen is able to save her son in a construction elevator , but is killed herself.

In a flashback told by Quinn, it is explained that the dragons burned the dinosaurs and then went into a kind of " hibernation ". Now suddenly hundreds, then thousands, and finally millions of them appear and attack humanity. The world powers use their entire arsenal, including nuclear weapons , against them, but destroy their own cities rather than the fire lizards.

2020: The dragons have spread all over the earth and burned almost all human civilization . Quinn now leads a colony of survivors who are hiding in the English hinterland in the old ruins of a castle . Together with his best friend Creedy, he teaches children from an early age to hide from dragons and to be constantly vigilant. He believes that at some point, when the dragons have consumed all of their food, they will perish on their own.

But then a unit of the US Army appears under the leadership of the coarse Denton Van Zan. You are dragon hunters; and with a last tank , some support vehicles and a helicopter from pilot Alex Jensen they are chasing one of the monsters. Quinn is forced to come to their aid, and although several members of Van Zan's team die, they join forces to kill the dragon.

The residents of the castle want to celebrate with the soldiers, but they refuse. Van Zan calls them weaklings and asks them to come out of their hiding place and go into battle with him. He has found that all dragons sighted or killed so far have been females and that there is most likely only a single male who has repeatedly hibernated and awakened since the beginning of evolution when the planet provides enough food for a new generation of fire-breathers.

Van Zan begins to use force to recruit men from the castle for his campaign to London , where he suspects the male. Quinn tries to stop him and a fight ensues in which Quinn is clearly defeated. The ex-soldier and his troops set off, but are tracked down by the male dragon and ambushed; all burned, only Alex, Van Zan and an injured soldier survive. Then the monster takes on the castle of Quinn and his friends, who can just bring some of them to safety in a shelter. Creedy is killed.

Van Zan returns to the ruined castle humiliated. Quinn explains to him that only he can get her to London safely. Accompanied by Alex, the two set off. In the destroyed metropolis, where the dragons are already starting to eat each other, the final fight against the male dragon takes place. Van Zan sacrifices himself to Quinn to gain an advantage, and it can 'help one with Alex Armbrust - Arrow with an explosive charge to shoot into the mouth of the beast who once killed his mother. The charge explodes inside the dragon, killing him.

A few months pass. Quinn and Alex and other castle residents set up a transmitter mast on a hill on the coast , with the help of which they receive messages from other survivors from France . No kites have appeared in the sky for three months.
