Gary Barber (* 1957 in Johannesburg ) is an American film producer of South African Jewish origin.

Life

Gary Barber studied economics at Witwatersrand University . After completing his studies, he first works as an auditor.

The equestrian fanatic won a trip to the Arlington Million Horse Race in Illinois in 1982 . In the same year he emigrated to the United States, where his brother Cecil Barber had lived since 1979. Together with his brother, he bought numerous horses that took part in various races. In the mid-1980s, Barber took American citizenship.

In 1998, he and his business partner Roger Birnbaum founded the production, finance and sales company Spyglass Entertainment in Los Angeles . He had his greatest success in 2010 with the production of the film The Tourist , which grossed US $ 280 million at the box office worldwide.

In December 2010, Barber took over the post of chairman and chief executive officer of the insolvent film production company Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer . Under his aegis, MGM co-financed the hugely successful agent thriller James Bond 007: Skyfall with Eon Productions and Sony Pictures , which became the most successful film in the Bond franchise to date, with gross revenues of more than 1.1 billion US dollars. MGM then also financed blockbuster hits like The Hobbit , 21 Jump Street and Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters . Thanks to these successes and rigid austerity measures, Barber was able to present a healthy balance sheet for the previously heavily indebted MGM for the first time.

After Barber's contract with MGM had been extended to 2022 at the end of 2017, the company dismissed him in March 2018, which industry media such as Variety or Deadline.com saw as a “surprising” or “shocking” twist given Barber's undisputed performance as CEO of MGM designated. Barber received a $ 260 million settlement from MGM for his stake in the company.

Barber has three daughters and lives in Los Angeles.
