action

In 2005 Schmidt and Jenko graduated from Sagan High School - Schmidt is the insecure nerd who never gets a girl, while Jenko is the popular athlete, albeit with miserable grades. They only graduate from the Metropolitan Police Academy because they support each other, and so now in 2012 they are cycling in the city park. There's not much to see of the hoped-for action. When she nor the arrest of a Einprozent - motorcycle gang screw up, they will be in the area 21 Jump Street demoted. In an abandoned Korean church, the terrifying Captain Dickson instructs her to investigate undercover at her old high school . A life-threatening drug called OVS ("Oh damn shit", in the original HFS, "Holy Fucking Shit") is in circulation there. He gives them the identities of Brad and Doug McQuaid, a pair of brothers, with Schmidt taking the chemistry class to find out who makes the drugs and Jenko the photography and acting class to find out who distributes the drugs. He gives them two rules to take with them, namely not to get caught and not to have sex with students or teachers. If they fail to do so, they will be fired.

As a camouflage, the two live with Schmidt's parents. Before the first day of school together, Jenko Schmidt explains the rules of being cool. You should never try hard to do anything, make fun of everyone who makes an effort, looks attractive and if someone comes across as stupid, just hit them. Unfortunately, these rules will no longer work in 2012, because when Jenko applies them, he knocks down a black homosexual and has to justify this in front of the school. The two identities are swapped, so that Jenko is suddenly in chemistry class and Schmidt in the unpopular acting class. But there he learned from Molly the phone number 555-0165 , which he used to contact the drug dealer. It's the cool Eric Molson who not only sells them OVS but also makes them take it right away. On the way, completely intoxicated, they meet Mr. Walters, the PE teacher, before they mix up their respective classes.

They now know who is selling the drugs, but the captain wants to get hold of the drug producer. So Jenko and Schmidt try to get closer to the suspects by organizing a party; the captain admonishes the two, however, not to distribute alcohol to minors. Of course, the two do not adhere to it and buy alcohol and drugs in large quantities to make an impression on the kids. When it comes to a fight with a rival clique, Eric is so impressed by Schmidt that he offers him the friendship (and a lucrative job as a dealer). As a result, Schmidt spends more time with the cool and neglects Jenko, who has to hang out with the nerds from now on. Since the nerds cracked Eric's cell phone and can now hear what is being said in the area, Jenko has to listen to Schmidt gossiping about him.

However, he also hears a piñata being handed over, which is why they later watch Eric handing a piñata to the 1% rockers at school. Both decide to pursue the rockers. But during the ride an argument starts, so that they accidentally run over a rocker and are now being followed by the rockers themselves. They have to change cars twice before they can get to school in time, because Schmidt has a performance of Peter Pan . But the argument between the two escalates, so that the performance becomes an absolute disaster and both are expelled from school. That's reason enough for the captain to fire both of them. Before they pack their things, however, Eric equips them with weapons and asks them to protect him so that both arm themselves and show up for the prom. When Eric takes her to a hotel room, they both discover that Mr. Walters, the PE teacher, was making the drugs all the time. They are exposed at the subsequent meeting with the 1% rockers. In the shooting that followed, they were rescued by two DEA agents (Tom Hanson and Doug Penhall) who were undercover rockers for five years and who died in the shooting. Schmidt and Jenko follow the rockers. They in turn pursue Mr. Walters, who stole money from them and took Molly hostage. With the help of an improvised bomb - the chemistry course paid off - Jenko can kill the rockers. Walters continues to threaten to shoot Molly. After Walters fired a shot at Jenko (who luckily was intercepted by his bulletproof vest), Schmidt killed Walters with a shot in the penis. Walters is arrested, Schmidt and Jenko are the heroes of the day, and their new assignment will be a college assignment.

criticism

With this “pretty good” […] mixture of screwball comedy , action and A Strange Couple , it is “inevitable that the film will be covered in penis jokes,” said renowned film critic Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times . However, he was also surprised that the film was "funnier and warmer than he could have imagined."

The New York Times chief film critic A. O. Scott praised the fact that the film is being carried less by chases than by the two actors Hill and Tatum, because the two are "skillful and not embarrassing enough to play the confused identities sometimes amusing and sometimes also touching" . In his opinion, the film does not want to stimulate thought, but rather to be fun, "which it does surprisingly." However, he also has aggressive satirical tips on "bullying, bigotry and drug abuse without risking being offensive." Plot "silly, spirited and even clever."

For the renowned film critic James Berardinelli , the film is “stupid and lightweight”, which is mainly due to the fact that the “chemistry of the main actors is capricious but obvious”. He also said that "some of the funniest scenes have Ice Cube's Evil Black Captain ".

The lexicon of international films said: “An unbalanced mixture of teenage comedy, drug thriller and buddy movie based loosely on the television series of the same name, which starts out charmingly, but soon succumbs to the common set pieces of action cinema and spices them up with vulgar-homophobic jokes. "

background

The film has grossed just over $ 200 million worldwide since it opened in theaters on March 16, 2012 (on a budget of 42 million).
