My darling, our family and me (Original title: Four Christmases ) is an American - German comedy film directed by Seth Gordon from 2008 . Robert Duvall , Sissy Spacek , Jon Voight and Mary Steenburgen are cast in leading roles .

action

Kate and Brad McVie are a happily unmarried couple and live together in San Francisco . Both Kate and Brad's parents are divorced. Like every year, both of the parents' four new families are invited to Christmas and, like every year, they decide this time to go away and spend Christmas together. In order to avoid the respective family celebrations, every year they come up with the most bizarre excuses (for example, they pretend to be doing voluntary work in poor countries) that they serve their families.

This year the couple decided to fly to the Fiji Islands. When they arrived at the airport, both of them were shocked to find that all flights were canceled due to thick fog. Unfortunately, they are randomly interviewed by a television crew and recorded what is broadcast live on the news. Their families see this report and call for explanations. Since Kate and Brad no longer see any way to talk their way out of the matter, they decide to visit all four families and take part in their more or less hectic Christmas parties.

Production notes, publication

The director Seth Gordon, known for several documentaries, made his feature film debut with this film. Production began in December 2007 during the scriptwriters' strike, which made script changes impossible. It was made even more difficult by Time Warner's acquisition of New Line Cinema .

The film was shot in Los Angeles , San Francisco and Santa Clarita . It opened in US cinemas on November 26, 2008, after having premiered in Hollywood on November 20, 2008. The German theatrical release was on December 4, 2008. In the German-speaking region of Switzerland, the film also opened on December 4, 2008, in Austria on December 5, 2008.

reception

criticism

The lexicon of the international film said: “A slightly different Christmas comedy that doesn't soften its story, but tells it with slapstick and tangible humor. The excellent camera work and convincing actors in particular ensure ambitious entertainment. "

Susan King referred to the cast of the "romantic comedy" in the Los Angeles Times on November 2, 2008 as "A-list" ("A-list cast").

At Rotten Tomatoes , the film received a tomatometer reading of 24% in the critics' and 47% in the audience rating with the conclusion: Despite a strong cast, this sour Christmas comedy suffers from a trite script.

Award

The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating “valuable”.
