He studied architecture at Yale University and spent six months on a development project in Kenya during his studies . There he helped plan the infrastructure of a small village and captured the process with his video camera . After his return to the USA, he acquired the basics of filmmaking himself and completed his documentary, which was shot in Africa. As this work gave him more pleasure than his studies, he finally turned his back on architecture and tried to gain a foothold in the film business.

Actors Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon , who were just preparing for the film My Sweetheart, Our Family and I (2008), were so impressed with Gordon's work that they suggested him to the production company New Line Cinema to direct and they did hired him shortly afterwards. The film was a huge hit at the box office, particularly in the United States, grossing over $ 120.1 million in total.

After his first feature film, he devoted himself to directing individual episodes of television series such as Das Büro and Modern Family and wrote a few scripts on the side. He reached another high point in his career with the star-studded comedy Kill the Boss , which celebrated its world premiere on June 30, 2011 at Grauman's Chinese Theater on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles . The film opened in US cinemas on July 8, 2011 and grossed $ 28.3 million on the opening weekend, putting it in second place on the US box office.
