Unbeaten is a 2011 American documentary film directed by Daniel Lindsay and TJ Martin . The film shows the problems of the American football team at Manassas High School in Memphis and their players. The film premiered on March 13, 2011 at the South by Southwest Festival, or SXSW for short. In 2012 the film was awarded an Oscar in the category Best Documentary .
action
The Manassas High School Tigers American football team was founded in 1899 and has not won a play-off game since then . In 2004 that appears to be changing. Bill Courtney , a former high school football coach and businessman , volunteers to help. It strengthens the emotional and physical strength of the team, which increases self-confidence. In the summer / autumn season 2009, the first play-off victory seems to be within reach. The film focuses on three players. OC Brown, the team's star player, Montrail "Money" Brown hoping for an academic scholarship , and Chavis Daniels, a talented linebacker who has trouble controlling his temper . Personal as well as sporting and school problems and conflicts of the players are presented.
reception
The opinions of the critics were mostly positive. Joe Leydon called the "intimacy" of the documentary in an article in Variety "remarkable, even in cinéma vérité standards". David Rooney of the Hollywood Reporter called the pace of the film "sharp modulated and exciting," the music, the storytelling hold "lively and dynamic." The film is an “unusually rich, full-bodied drama” Christopher Bell of Indiewire judged: While the documentary is a “captivating experience” at the moment, there is “very little to chew on” afterwards. However, depending on the mood, the “good old 'inspirational story'” could “be enough”.
The Weinstein Company auctioned the rights to distribution and remake during the SXSW Festival for a seven-figure sum.
