Madonna in the Schnütgen Museum

An oak carving in the Museum Schnütgen (inventory number: A 46), which was made around 1270, is called Madonna on the wide throne seat .

description

The Madonna figure (61.5 cm high, 61.5 cm wide and 20 cm deep) sits on a wide throne that was widened a generation or two after it was built. Maria holds out an apple to the child and the boy stretches his left hand towards the apple, with his right hand he grasps his mother's veil . A dragon lies at Mary's feet as a symbol of the victory of the Blessed Mother over evil.

The certainly wealthy client of this work, which was made by a Cologne carver, is not known. Striking is the light and sweeping folds of Maria's dress and the intimate contact between the two people. The face of the Blessed Mother bears friendly, smiling features.
