The 2012 Academy Awards took place on February 26, 2012 at the Hollywood & Highland Center (formerly Kodak Theater ) in Los Angeles . It was the 84th presentation of the Academy Awards ( English 84th Academy Awards ) since the first presentation in 1929 . In the year of the Academy Awards, awards are always given to films from the previous year, in this case the films of 2011 . The honorary prizes had already been awarded in November 2011. Michel Hazanavicius' silent film homage The Artist prevailed as the best film and was awarded prizes in four other categories. Martin Scorsese's Hugo Cabret got the same number of prizes in secondary categories .

Key data

The proposals as to which films can be nominated in the individual categories could be made by the members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) between December 27, 2011 and January 13, 2012. The nominations were finally announced on January 24, 2012 at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater . As in previous years, the traditional gala will then take place one month later.

Moderation

The comedian and actor Billy Crystal , who previously hosted an Academy Awards eight times, was hired to host the gala .

controversy

In the run-up to the Academy Awards producer gave Brett Ratner and, subsequently, Eddie Murphy , who as host of the show are to lead, would announce the withdrawal of their functions. Ratner stumbled upon homophobic comments while appearing on the Howard Stern Show . For example, when he was doing the promotion for his film Temporary Gangster, he was asked whether he would rehearse with the actors. Ratner replied: “What is that, rehearse? Rehearsing is for fagots. ”In the same show, he also highlighted his skills as a lover (“ I have huge balls ”) and put Lindsay Lohan on the same level as sexually transmitted diseases . Since the US media reacted with indignation to Ratner's statements, Ratner had to give up his position as producer of the Academy Awards on the advice of AMPAS President Tom Sherak . As a result, Eddie Murphy, who is one of Brett Ratner's good friends, announced that he would not be available to host the Academy Awards.

innovation

At the end of May 2011 it was announced that AMPAS was considering that the members of AMPAS should no longer announce nominations in writing by post, but online, via the Internet. The postal voting system is to be abolished in the long term.

For the first time between five and ten films were nominated for the best film , which received at least five percent of the votes for the film most popular in the preselection. In addition, the regulations for the Best Animated Feature Film category have been changed so that at least eight animated films must have been published per year for a prize to be awarded in this category. Depending on the number of publications, up to five films can be nominated. Previously, this category had to be approved by the Board of Governors every year .
