Michaël R. Roskam , b. Michaël Reynders, (born October 9, 1972 in Sint-Truiden ) is a Belgian film director .

Life

Roskam was born Michaël Reynders in Sint-Truiden in 1972, but took his mother's surname “Roskam” and abbreviated his father's surname, Reynders, as “R.”. After attending grammar school, Roskam initially studied painting and contemporary art at the Hogeschool Sint-Lukas in Brussels until 1997 . Originally he wanted to become a comic artist like his great role model Jacques Tardi and worked as a journalist for the daily De Morgen and the Saatchi & Saatchi agency, among others .

Roskam released his first short film Haun in 2002 ; His second short film Carlo followed in 2004 . He also directed video installations. In 2005 he completed his Masters in Screenplay Development and Screenwriting at the Binger Filmlab in Amsterdam . For his third short film commission in Corsica , in which Matthias Schoenaerts took the lead role, Roskam was nominated for the Joseph Plateau Prize in 2006 in the category “Best Belgian Short Film”.

Roskam's debut feature film was Bullhead , in which he again cast Matthias Schoenaerts in the lead role. The film freely tells the story of the veterinary inspector Karel Van Noppen, who was murdered in 1995, and is set in Sint-Truiden, Roskam's birthplace. Bullhead premiered at the Berlinale 2011 in February 2011 and won numerous awards. In addition to winning two Magrittes , the film was nominated for a César in the category “ Best Foreign Film ” and in 2012 for an Oscar in the category “ Best Foreign Language Film ”. Sint-Truiden made Roskam an honorary citizen in 2011. The detective film The Drop , based on Dennis Lehane's short story Animal Rescue , was Roskam's first Hollywood film; again he cast Matthias Schoenaerts in a leading role.
