Pixomondo is an international company specializing in visual effects . It was founded in 2001 by its former managing director and executive producer Thilo Kuther in Pfungstadt near Darmstadt . The current management since 2019 is Jonathan Slow . The Pixomondo Studios GmbH & Co. KG has as of January 2020 8 worldwide locations.

Field of activity

Pixomondo produces visual effects for feature films and television productions such as Game of Thrones , Midway , Hugo Cabret , Fast & Furious Five and The Mandalorian . Pixomondo also develops visual media for trade fairs and live events, corporate and industrial films , advertising and interactive media as well as apps . Pixomondo's customers include companies such as Porsche , Mercedes-Benz , Volkswagen , Lufthansa , National Georaphics and manroland .

history

The company was founded in 2001 by Thilo Kuther as a design studio. Shortly thereafter, the range of services was supplemented by the creation of motion graphics for event media as well as animations for product films and commercials. At the end of 2003, 40 VFX, CGI and compositing specialists were working at the first location in Pfungstadt near Darmstadt . In 2004, the work on the documentary Atlantropa - The Dream of the New Continent followed, the first digital visualizations for television.

In 2005 the company opened a feature film location in Ludwigsburg . The first project there was the visual effects for the movie The Red Baron .

In 2005 PIXOMONDO opened a studio in London . In 2007 the location was opened in Frankfurt and in July 2008 in Los Angeles . In the same year, Roland Emmerich commissioned the company with the production of 100 composites of complete CG environments for the 2012 film .

In 2009 PIXOMONDO Shanghai and Beijing followed on the Asian continent . In 2010 the London location was expanded, the Munich and Hamburg locations were added. The Toronto location was added in 2011 . As of April 2012, Pixomondo employed around 670 people.

Pixomondo employees Ben Grossmann (VFX supervisor) and Alex Henning (DFX supervisor) received the Oscar in 2012 for the visual effects in Martin Scorsese's Hugo Cabret . With 854 shots that have a running time of 62 minutes in the final film, Pixomondo created around 98 percent of all visual effects.

In February 2013 it was announced that the London and Detroit locations would be closed for structural reasons. In May 2013, the company had to close the Berlin location due to ongoing restructuring processes and the VFX crisis . In addition, the company made headlines in 2013 when it failed to pay numerous freelance fees for several months and had to face several lawsuits.

The new location in Montreal opened in 2019 , which is the company's third location in Canada. Also in 2019, Thilo Kuther stepped down as managing director and handed over the position to Jonathan Slow .

Live media, commercials & corporate film

In the "Live Media" area, the company supports several automobile brands at the most important trade fairs, such as B. the International Motor Show , the Geneva Motor Show and the North American International Auto Show .

The interactive elements and the non-interactive display in National Geographics Ocean Encounter were also created by Pixomondo, as was the display for the Jurassic World Live Tour and Aerosmith's Deuces are Wild .

The company also develops interactive media applications for touchscreens , smartphones , tablet computers and microsites .
