Pettson and Findus - The most beautiful Christmas ever

Pettson and Findus - Little Quälgeist, Big Friendship is a German , partly animated, children's film by director Ali Samadi Ahadi , based on the children's book series Pettson and Findus by Sven Nordqvist . The film opened in German cinemas on March 13, 2014. It is the prelude to the revision of the cartoon series from 1999–2009. In 2016 Pettson and Findus followed - The most beautiful Christmas ever and in 2018 the film Pettson and Findus - Findus is moving .

action

Odd old Pettersson lives alone on his farm in Sweden and often spends time inventing things and machines to make his life easier. Unfortunately, they often don't work as they should. He has just invented the world's first “crumb from table sweeper”, but the most important parts fall off the first time it is used. His chickens, who are supposed to eat the crumbs, don't care. You don't even listen to him talk to himself.

One day, the helpful Beda Andersson puts an end to Pettersson's loneliness when she gives him a little tomcat, which she found in the forest and hid from the hunter Gustavsson when his hunting dog was on his track. Happy Pettson gives him the name Findus because this word was on the box that Beda had used as a transport box. Pettersson takes loving care of him, builds him a little bed and reads him stories at night. The adventures begin when little Findus suddenly begins to speak. First of all, Pettson sews green trousers with stripes for Findus, which the cat had wished for.

The next morning Findus explores the house early in the morning while Pettson is still sleeping. In doing so, he discovers the living space of the little Mucklas, but initially considers them to be monsters and travels before them. In his fear he hides under a box where Gustavsson's hunting dog is sniffing out and besieging him. Pettersson, who has woken up in the meantime and is looking for Findus, frees him when he discovers him under the box. Then he shows Findus more of the world outside the house and goes with him into his garden. Findus discovers a spring there and immediately has fun with it, which also amuses Pettson. Then there is also an old whisk lying around, which gives the two of them the idea to bake a cake and celebrate a birthday. Findus likes it so much that it whines until Pettersson tells him that his birthday is not just once, but twice a year. Findus would like this second time the next day. But Pettersson cannot find the flour to bake and so he would have to go to the village to buy some. Unfortunately, his bike broke down and the key for the shed with the tools is in the well. Since there is now no pancake cake, a cow in the pasture in Findus awakens the desire to be a bullfighter. But the young bull has little understanding for gimmicks and chases Findus from the pasture. Pettersson is pretty upset because the hangover was very reckless. Both are very sad about this first argument and get along a short time afterwards, because after all, one needs the other. After Pettersson fetches the key from the well with a fishing rod, repairs his bike and buys new flour, he can finally start baking the cake. When the cake is ready and Beda appears for coffee, she eats the whole cake alone.

Gustavsson warns Pettersson about a fox that he has still not been able to catch. To be on the safe side, Findus first brings all ten chickens into the house, but that doesn't seem like the best solution. Pettersson is working on a new invention with which he wants to drive the fox away: a fake chicken with a balloon and pepper as the inside. But that's not all, he builds a cable car for Findus, with which he can float out of the roof window as a ghost across the courtyard. But it is still daylight and Breda has another idea. She brings the rooster "Caruso", which she saved from being slaughtered by Gustavssons, to Pettersson in the yard. After all, he could also take care of the chickens with his powerful voice. The only ones who are excited about the new roommate, however, seem to be the chickens. When the fox actually appears that night, Findus feels sorry for the poor animal, which looks very frightened and also limps. So he warns him and instead of him Gustavsson and his hunting dog “fall into the trap”. With a great roar and fireworks, they chase the two of them away from the courtyard and Findus sees himself as a great hero. Only the chickens see it differently, for them their rooster is the big winner because it pounced on the fox and put it to flight when the predator tried to hide in the house amid all the commotion. Findus is extremely annoyed by the "stupid" rooster, who not only crows obtrusively, but now also has Pettersson's attention. He feels neglected and wants to leave the farm. Findus thinks back to himself when he realizes that he is actually quite lucky with his new home. He drives the rooster away with a ruse, because he tells him that Pettersson has got sick from all his crowing and that it will soon end up in the saucepan. But when Findus notices that Pettersson is sad because the rooster has flown away, he brings him back to the yard. Together with Beda, Gustavsson and the animals they celebrate a happy party.

background

The film is based on the short stories "How Findus came to Pettson", "A birthday cake for the cat", "Fireworks for the fox" and "Findus and the rooster in the basket" by Sven Nordqvist. Sven Nordqvist accompanied the film team from the beginning and especially helped with the script development.

With a budget of 8.4 million euros, which is very large by German standards, the film is one of the most expensive German family films. This was mainly financed by funding from the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW , Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung, Hessen Invest Film, MFG Medien- und Filmgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg , Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg , the Filmförderungsanstalt , the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Medien , the German Film Fund, the MEDIA Program of the European Community and the Board of Trustees for Young German Film .

The studio recordings were made in 2012 in the Erfurt STUDIOPARK KinderMedienZentrum .

The cat Findus was elaborately realized by the award-winning German visual effects studio Pixomondo . 150 specialists worked for 16 months to animate Findus on the computer.

reception

The film received the rating of "particularly valuable" from the German Film and Media Assessment (FBW) . In the jury's statement, the “many loving details” were emphasized and that the film accommodated “children's viewing habits”. The music is "catchy" and underlines "the positive message of the stories". Overall, the film is a "beautifully told and grandiose children's film that entertains its young audience with positive messages with loving details and harmonious music".

The film service described the “lovable film adaptation” as a “technically convincing combination of real actors and digitally animated scenery”. The film meets the young audience with an “unagitated dramaturgy” and conveys “the value of friendship and honesty”. The film magazine Cinema said that "you couldn't have found a more suitable actor than Ulrich Noethen" for the role of Pettersson. The only weak point of the "detailed real film adaptation" is that "CGI tomcat Findus [...] on the other hand looks quite artificial". The film website kino.de , on the other hand, said that the CGI effects were convincing and the animated tomcat “fits seamlessly into the lovingly staged idyllic farm”. In conclusion, it says that the film is a "funny, touching story about friendship, trust and security".

When film starts , however, there is also talk of a “quick-start dramaturgy”, which does not show the same level of care as, for example, with the equipment, as well as “staging antics”. The film was partly impressive, but it was also often overshot. The result is a somewhat long film ... that captivates more through its creative than its narrative qualities.

Awards

In 2014 the film received the Children's Media Prize The White Elephant , which has been awarded annually since 2005 as part of the Munich Film Festival .
