Sven Nordqvist

Pettson und Findus - in the Swedish original Pettson och Findus - is a series of children's books by Sven Nordqvist . The main characters are the old man Pettson and his tomcat Findus. The books are published by Opal-Verlag, and there is also a series of comic books published by Egmont Kärnan . In Germany, the books are published by Oetinger-Verlag in the translation of Angelika Kutsch .

main characters

Sven Nordqvist originally wanted to write a story about two old people who still have something to do before they can get down to business and then almost no longer know what they were up to. So the old man Pettersson needed someone to talk to. But that shouldn't be a woman. So he came up with a talking cat.

Pettersson

Pettersson is a somewhat quirky old man who lives alone in a little house on the edge of a Swedish village. He is a reliable partner and is always there when Findus needs help again. But he is also a tinkerer who tinkers with the most unusual devices. His property consists of a large garden and three red houses with white window frames and wooden roofs: the apartment building, the wooden shed and the building that houses the chicken coop and joiner's shed. Pettersson usually wears a striped shirt with a waistcoat, trousers and a distinctive light brown brimmed hat, as well as glasses with round lenses; in winter a hat with ear flaps and a coat. He is quite tall and has a short gray beard.

Findus

Findus is a young, brown tabby cat with green eyes who is always pranked and got his name from the fact that Pettersson got him in a box with the label "Findus green peas" ( Findus is the name of a large Swedish food company). From the material with which the box was lined, Pettersson sewed a pair of bib shorts for him; he also wears a small green cap. Findus is lively and impatient, everywhere and nowhere. Nordqvist often lets Findus do gymnastics several times on a book page in order to illustrate sequences of movements without being interrupted by comic panels. Findus can speak, but hides this from the other people in the village.

Other "actors"

  • Prillan, Mathilda, Fia, Doris, Majros, Soffi-Moffi, Stina-Fina, Henrietta, Gacki and Henni are Pettersson's ten talking stupid white chickens who act a bit affected. You are the only female on the farm. Her favorite pastime is having her beloved coffee gossip .
  • Mucklas are small beings who live hidden in the house and have a wide variety of colors and shapes. Nordqvist increased their actions as the volumes progressed. They sometimes laugh maliciously when Pettson or Findus has an accident or steals smaller objects. Pettersson cannot see the Mucklas, but Findus can and is sometimes very good friends with them. In addition to the "classic" Mucklas there are also those that look very small like animals or Santa Clauses.
  • The curious neighbor Gustavsson likes to tell Pettersson's latest quirks around the village, but is also fed nonsensical stories by Pettersson so that he has something to tell. In addition to Gustavsson, Gustavsson's wife and their son Axel, there are a few other neighbors, for example old Anna Andersson ( Pettersson gets a Christmas visit ), whose first name is also 'Beda' ( How Findus came to Pettson ), and other people who only show up once. Pettersson may once have had a closer relationship with Mrs. Andersson; in any case, his boat is called “Beda” in Armer Pettersson .
  • In the morning, Findus, it will be what , the longest volume in the series, several unique characters occur: Pettersson acquaintances Signild, the box seller Kirsten and Henrik, who closely related a lonely forest-dwelling violinist and especially figures with Santa in conjunction . For example, there is a strange little postman and a salesman who Pettson and Findus run into and who play crucial roles in the course of the plot. Santa Claus himself also appears in this book; one can surmise that he is also the person who takes the wish list from the snow cave, draws the drawings of Polhem's mechanical alphabet, and lays the flax on Pettersson's stairs. All the deeds of the individual persons are connected with a distinctive cord that appears three times (four times in the pictures): a band of twisted goat hair wrapped with thin gold threads.

A birthday cake for the cat

Findus celebrates its birthday three times a year. Since Pettersson has no more flour in the house, he has to cycle into the village to buy some. But one tire is flat, the repair kit in the shed, the key in the well, the fishing rod in the attic, and the ladder to the attic is on Andersson's pasture, where the bull is grazing ...

Pettersson procures a rooster for the hen house, which is named Caruso because of its powerful voice and turns the chickens' heads while he annoys Findus with his screams, so that he tries to scare the rooster away.

How Findus came to Pettson

The little tomcat came in a cardboard box for green peas as a present for old, single Pettersson. Initially, the cat cannot speak and is not even wearing pants. But one day he looks over Pettersson's shoulder while reading the newspaper and says his first sentence: "I want pants like that too."
