Antalaha is a city on the northeast coast of Madagascar , north of the Masoala peninsula . The name of the city means place where there is a lot of water .

geography

Antalaha is 1,449 km from the capital and 537 km from the provincial capital Masoalas Antsiranana (Diego) and is 88 m above sea level.

15 km south of the city there is an airfield in Antsirabato (IATA code: ANM, ICAO code: FMNH). From there there are connections to Antananarivo and Toamasina, among others . The place is more difficult to reach by road.

history

The place in the Sava region is known as the world capital of vanilla . This product, introduced by La Réunion in 1905, caused a huge upswing in the region. Today there are also plantations that plant cloves , coffee , cocoa , pepper , cinnamon and lychee . Antalaha is also the center of traditional shipbuilding. The population grew from 17,541 (1975) to 23,949 (1993) to around 35,000 today. The inhabitants belong to the ethnic groups of the Betsimisaraka , Sakalava and Tsimihety .

climate

The climate is tropical and humid. It rains most from January to March. Then it's also quite hot. September and October are the most pleasant months to travel with little rain and temperatures of 21–23 ° C.

Tropical cyclones move through northeast Madagascar almost every year. Antalaha was devastated significantly in 2000. In mid-March 2007 (from Indlala ) and early April 2007 (from Jaya ), the city was hit again by cyclones. There were at least 90 deaths and 90% of Antalaha was destroyed.

Projet d'Analalava - "Long Forest"

(Ala = forest; lava = long)

The Swiss project was initiated by Erich Steiner. The main reason for this was that the flora and fauna in Madagascar is unique, as Madagascar separated from Africa early on. The rainforest, however, is increasingly being cut down, and no new plants can grow in the cut down areas. In addition, there are still 10 coastal virgin forests worldwide.

However, the project is not only concerned with the forest itself, but also with the population, so that schools can be looked after and crops grown. For example, no Europeans work on the project, only locals. The project is supported by Zurich Zoo , which has founded its own Madagascar greenhouse to make people aware of the diversity and uniqueness.

Since 2008, the Projet d'Analalava has also been an Austrian deployment site for the foreign service .
